Future Revealed: 2028 Mercedes-Benz VLE Redefines Luxury Travel

Mercedes-Benz is set to introduce its all-new, all-electric2028 VLE, which it refers to as a "Grand Limousine" rather than a luxury minivan.
Positioned as a luxury multipassenger vehicle, the VLE aims to carve out a new "white space" in the North American automotive market, a segment more familiar in Europe and Asia.
The VLE breaks from traditional minivan perceptions with its substantial size, with North America exclusively receiving the long-wheelbase variant. Measuring 215.9 inches in length, it surpasses even the Cadillac Escalade by over three inches.
The extended length, particularly from the B-pillar rearward, is intentionally designed to maximize passenger and cargo space. It is important to note that all figures and specifications for the VLE are preliminary, with official EC type approval currently pending.
At its anticipated North American launch in 2027, the VLE will offer two initial electric powertrains, both utilizing a 115-kWh nickel manganese cobalt battery pack.
The VLE300 will feature a single front-wheel motor delivering 272 horsepower, while the VLE400 4Matic will employ two motors for all-wheel drive capabilities.
The VLE400 is rated at 357 horsepower and is projected to accelerate from standstill to 62 mph in 6.5 seconds. A clutch mechanism allows the rear motor to disconnect when not required, optimizing efficiency during everyday driving.
Mercedes estimates a maximum range of 404 miles on the European WLTP cycle, translating to an estimated 360 miles under U.S. EPA testing conditions. This impressive range is aided by a drag coefficient of just 0.25, making it exceptionally aerodynamic for a vehicle of its size.
The VLE's 800V electrical system is designed for rapid charging, with Mercedes-Benz claiming the ability to add nearly 200 miles of range in just 15 minutes when connected to the fastest DC chargers. This positions the VLE competitively among the most capable electric vehicles currently available.
Following the initial launch, a more affordable version featuring a smaller 80-kWh lithium iron phosphate battery pack is anticipated for North America. While specific naming conventions are yet to be announced, this will not be the entry-level VLE250 model available in other established MPV markets.
Looking further ahead, Mercedes-Benz intends to introduce non-EV powertrains for the VLE, likely including gas and possibly hybrid variants. North America is expected to be a primary market for these conventionally powered models, mirroring the current V-Class vehicles that the VLE is globally replacing.
