Football Fury: Sir Jim Ratcliffe's Controversial Immigration Stance Triggers FA Investigation

Manchester United co-owner, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, has faced widespread criticism and potential Football Association scrutiny following controversial comments he made regarding immigration in the United Kingdom.
In an interview with Sky News, Ratcliffe, who is also the founder of the INEOS chemicals group, stated: “You can’t have an economy with nine million people on benefits and huge levels of immigrants coming in. I mean, the UK has been colonised. It’s costing too much money.”
He further elaborated, claiming the UK population had increased from 58 million in 2020 to 70 million, asserting this represented an influx of 12 million people. However, figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) contradict these claims, estimating the UK population at 67 million in mid-2020 and 70 million in mid-2024, with the population last being close to 58 million around 2000.
His remarks immediately drew significant backlash from political leaders and football bodies. Prime Minister Keir Starmer described the comments as “offensive and wrong,” and ordered Ratcliffe to apologise. A Downing Street spokesperson added that such comments “play into the hands of those who want to divide our country.”
The Football Association (FA) is understood to be investigating whether Ratcliffe's comments brought football into disrepute, which could lead to an official charge and an embarrassing situation for the billionaire.
In response to the outcry, Sir Jim Ratcliffe issued a statement expressing regret for his choice of language. He stated: “I am sorry that my choice of language has offended some people in the UK and Europe and caused concern, but it is important to raise the issue of controlled and well-managed immigration that supports economic growth.”
He clarified that his comments were made during discussions about UK policy at the European Industry Summit in Antwerp, where he aimed to stress the need for governments to manage migration alongside investment in skills, industry, and jobs to ensure long-term prosperity is shared by all. He emphasized the importance of maintaining open debate on the challenges facing the UK.
Manchester United also addressed the controversy, defending their commitment to diversity and inclusion without directly naming Sir Jim. The club issued a statement affirming: “Manchester United prides itself on being an inclusive and welcoming club.
Our diverse group of players, staff and global community of supporters reflect the history and heritage of Manchester; a city that anyone can call home.” The club highlighted its
