Everything You Need to Know About OpenClaw AI
If you are reading this, then you definitely want to know about OpenClaw AIThe open-source autonomous agent reshaping AI automation and developer freedom
Within 72 hours of its launch, OpenClaw reportedly amassed over 60,000 GitHub stars, a number that has since exploded to more than 197,000 as of mid-February 2026, making it one of the fastest-growing open-source projects in GitHub history.
What Is OpenClaw AI?
OpenClaw AI is an open-source autonomous AI agent, a locally deployable assistant that connects large language models (LLMs) to your computer and apps, enabling it to perform real-world actions rather than simply generate text.
Launched in November 2025 by PSPDFKit founder Peter Steinberger, the project went through two earlier names—Clawdbot (dropped after objections from Anthropic over similarities to its Claude chatbot) and Moltbot (abandoned after cybercriminal impersonation), before settling on OpenClaw.
The naming controversy only accelerated its viral spread.
OpenClaw runs locally on your own hardware, acting as a gateway between AI models such as ChatGPT, Claude, or DeepSeek and your operating system.
With appropriate permissions, it can read and write files, execute scripts, send emails, browse the web, manage calendars, and interact with APIs. It acts, rather than just merely responding to prompt and instructions.
How It Works
OpenClaw operates across three core layers:
The local gateway — a control plane running on your machine that connects outward to your chosen LLM (using your own API key) and inward to your messaging channels and system tools.
The model connection layer — OpenClaw is model-agnostic. It doesn't train its own foundation model; it orchestrates existing LLMs, routing context and instructions between them and your local environment.
The agent skills system — modular packages (written in Markdown or TypeScript) that define how OpenClaw executes tasks.
Over 5,000 prebuilt skills are available via ClawHub, covering GitHub automation, smart home control, web workflows, and more.
Key Features
OpenClaw inherits advanced text reasoning, summarization, and code generation from whichever frontier model it's connected to.
When paired with multimodal models, it can process text, images, and structured inputs for document analysis and cross-format tasks.
Its heartbeat scheduler enables proactive, background automation without constant user prompting.
All files, interaction history, and preferences are stored as local Markdown files, keeping sensitive data on-device unless explicitly transmitted.
Who It's Built For
OpenClaw suits developers automating DevOps pipelines, researchers tracking long-running projects across Notion or Obsidian, enterprises needing local-first data control, and hobbyists building personal automation systems via WhatsApp, Telegram, or webhook triggers.
Its MIT license means the software itself is free, users only pay AI model API costs.
What Makes It Different
Most AI assistants operate inside a contained web interface but as for OpenClaw, it can act across your entire system.
One user reported their OpenClaw agent negotiated thousands of dollars off a car purchase via email while they slept. Another accidentally triggered an insurance dispute escalation because the agent misinterpreted a task, illustrating both the power and the risk.
Security Risks You Should Know
OpenClaw's autonomy introduces serious vulnerabilities.
In February 2026, existing documented reference showed the first infostealer attack targeting an OpenClaw configuration file, hijacking a personal AI agent's identity rather than just stealing passwords. Infosecurity Magazine described this as "a major shift in the infostealer landscape."
Cisco's AI security team flagged a malicious third-party skill on ClawHub capable of exfiltrating sensitive data.
A Snyk scan of nearly 4,000 ClawHub skills found that 91% of malicious skills combined prompt injection with traditional malware over 30,000 exposed instances were identified on the public internet, and a critical vulnerability (CVE-2026-25253) enables remote code execution when the bot processes attacker-controlled web content.
Security experts advise restricting gateway exposure, enforcing strong authentication, treating logs as untrusted input, implementing tool-level permissions, and sandboxing deployments. Sophos recommends using it only in disposable sandboxes with no access to sensitive information.
OpenClaw AI is powerful, flexible, and genuinely disruptive, but its risks are as real as its capabilities. For developers and tech-savvy users, it's one of the most ambitious open-source tools in the current AI landscape. For different enterprises, it demands careful governance before any serious deployment.
