German Authorities Probe Suspected Russian Weapons Cache Found Near Berlin

German security authorities are investigating a secret weapons cache discovered near Berlin amid suspicions that it may have been prepared for Russian-linked covert operations.

The professionally concealed depot, found in a wooded area near the Berlin-Brandenburg border, contained two live firearms, according to a joint investigation by WDR, NDR and Süddeutsche Zeitung.

German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt has since confirmed that authorities believe the weapons may have been intended for future attacks.

Tagesschau reported that federal prosecutors are investigating a suspect over alleged intelligence activity and preparation of a serious act of violence.

Investigators reportedly discovered the cache last year but kept the case secret while intelligence agencies attempted to determine who had placed the weapons there and who might eventually retrieve them.

The firearms were reportedly manipulated so they could no longer be used and fitted with tracking devices, allowing authorities to monitor the site without immediately exposing the investigation.

German officials suspect the hiding place could have functioned as a so-called dead drop, a method traditionally used by intelligence services to exchange weapons, documents or other materials without direct contact between operatives.

The joint WDR, NDR and Süddeutsche Zeitung investigation says security authorities believe the depot may have been linked to Russian intelligence and prepared for possible acts of sabotage or violence.

The discovery comes amid growing concern in Germany over suspected Russian espionage, sabotage and influence operations following Moscow’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

German security officials have previously warned that Russian services could target defence-industry figures, infrastructure, political opponents of the Kremlin and people publicly supporting Ukraine.

The weapons cache has therefore intensified concerns that espionage activity in Europe may be moving beyond intelligence gathering and towards preparations for physical attacks.

Dobrindt said the investigation remains active, while federal prosecutors are examining possible links to intelligence activity and plans for a serious offence against the state.

Russia has repeatedly rejected Western accusations of covert operations and sabotage as politically motivated.

For now, German authorities have not publicly established who placed the weapons in the forest or identified the intended target of any suspected operation.

What they have established is serious enough: a concealed cache of live weapons existed near the German capital, and investigators believe it may have been connected to preparations for an attack.
