End of an Era: Inside Ja Morant's Dramatic Memphis Exit

Ja Morant’s season ended in a game against the Atlanta Hawks on January 21. He made an exciting chase-down block on Dyson Daniels, showing his usual skill and athletic ability. But soon after, things changed.
A few days later, he was diagnosed with a UCL sprain in his left elbow. The injury kept him out for the rest of the season.
After Morant’s injury, the Memphis Grizzlies reportedly started rebuilding their team, and the key players like Jaren Jackson Jr. and Desmond Bane were traded for future draft picks.
This marked the end of the team’s once-promising core, which only won one playoff series together.
Even though the Grizzlies explored the idea of trading Morant, no deal happened, and the team’s general manager said the changes were about the “direction of the organization,” not just one player.
Not long ago, Morant was seen as the future of the franchise. He won Most Improved Player at 22 and helped lead Memphis to a 56-win season in 2021–22.
But since then, injuries and off-court problems have slowed things down, and now both Morant and the Grizzlies are at a turning point, with the team focusing more on rebuilding for the future..
Ja Morant’s problems off the court started to take attention away from his basketball talent less than a year after he signed a five-year, $193 million contract in July 2022 to become the face of the Memphis Grizzlies.
In January 2023, an incident involving his friends and members of the Indiana Pacers’ traveling party led to reports of a red laser being pointed at them.
The NBA investigated and confirmed a heated situation happened, but couldn’t prove a gun was involved. Still, Morant’s associates were banned from FedExForum.
In March 2023, Morant caused more concern after appearing on Instagram Live holding what looked like a gun at a strip club.
The NBA suspended him for eight games, calling his behavior reckless and dangerous.
A few weeks later, he was seen again with a gun on Instagram Live. This time, he received a 25-game suspension.
When he returned, he played well at first, averaging 25.1 points in nine games, but a shoulder injury ended his season early.
Since then, he has avoided major off-court issues, but his overall impact on the court has not looked as strong as before.
The Grizzlies made big changes by firing longtime Head Coach Taylor Jenkins after six seasons. They also brought in a new offensive system under Assistant Coach Tuomas Iisalo, hoping to better support Ja Morant.
However, things didn’t go smoothly. Morant and Iisalo clashed over coaching style, especially strict player rotations that some felt disrupted the team’s flow.
After a loss to the Lakers on Halloween night, Iisalo criticized Morant’s effort, and Morant reportedly responded poorly.
This led to a locker room disagreement and a one-game suspension for Morant.
Soon after, it became clear the relationship was breaking down, with the team supporting the coaching staff over Morant.
Around the league, teams have started to expect Morant could be traded. His value has dropped because of injuries and off-court issues, and early trade talks haven’t gone well.
Even interested teams are hesitant, and Memphis may only get a limited return if they move him.
There is growing talk that the Memphis Grizzlies could explore trading Ja Morant this summer. Some believe a big move in the NBA, like a trade for Giannis Antetokounmpo, could affect the market and make teams consider Morant if they miss out on other stars.
Even though Morant has said he wants to stay in Memphis, his future there is not certain.
Reports suggest he has feltdisconnected from the team, and his recent performances have been below his usual level.
He also missed important end-of-season interviews and was seen watching the final home game from the bench, where he gave a small gesture to fans that looked like a possible goodbye.
For now, nothing is confirmed, but many believe this summer could decide his future with the Grizzlies.
