Dyche's Fury: Forest Boss Blasts 'Farcical' VAR Call After Man Utd Defeat
)
Nottingham Forest and Manchester United played out an exciting 2-2 draw at the City Ground Stadium on Saturday, a result that brought Manchester United's three-game winning streak to an end. The match was significantly impacted by a controversial officiating decision concerning United's opening goal, which drew strong criticism and frustration from Forest manager Sean Dyche.
Manchester United took the lead when Casemiro scored from a corner. However, the awarding of this corner was highly contentious. Forest's Nicolò Savona appeared to have successfully kept the ball in play after clearing Bryan Mbeumo's delivery, chasing after his own header and seemingly preventing the entire ball from crossing the byeline. Despite this, linesman Akil Howson signalled that the ball had gone out of play, prompting referee Darren England to award the corner, which directly led to United's opener.
Sean Dyche vociferously described the decision as "farcical" and expressed deep frustration, highlighting that it was the second consecutive week his side had conceded from a wrongly awarded corner. He recalled being booked for complaining about a similar "clear mistake" in the previous week's 2-0 loss at Bournemouth. Dyche questioned the assistant referee's ability to accurately see the ball out from an estimated 70-odd yards away, especially with a goal and net obstructing the view, suggesting his own view was better despite not being in the ideal position.
A significant point of contention for Dyche was the video assistant referee's (VAR) current inability to intervene in such situations. Under current laws, VAR cannot review decisions involving the awarding of a corner instead of a goal-kick, regardless of whether it subsequently leads to a goal. Dyche, despite professing to be a "big fan of VAR," called for a crucial change to allow quick overruling of such clear mistakes. He emphasized, "The thing that annoys me the most... is that someone's got to have to overrule these decisions, just really quickly," arguing that a five-second review could prevent such errors.
Despite falling behind to the controversial goal, Nottingham Forest responded robustly. A period of sustained pressure at the start of the second half paid handsome rewards as Morgan Gibbs-White and Nicolò Savona struck within 92 seconds of each other, completely turning the game around and putting Forest in sight of a first league win under their new coach. Earlier, Matz Sels made a flying save to deny Amad Diallo after a well-worked United move.
However, Forest's lead was not secured. Manchester United ultimately salvaged a point when Amad Diallo scored a fine left-footed volley from the edge of the area after Forest failed to clear another corner. The draw provided a reality check for United, while Forest battled hard for an impressive home result. The contentious incident involving the corner decision further fueled ongoing debates about VAR's scope and its impact on crucial game-changing decisions in football.
