Claressa Shields, the undisputed women's heavyweight champion, made a spectacular return to middleweight, reclaiming the WBC and WBA titles with a dominant sixth-round TKO over Kaye Scott. Following an intensive 38-pound weight cut, Shields showcased her unparalleled skill and discipline, setting her sights on future challenges in the boxing world.Claressa Shields, widely recognized as ESPN's No. 1 pound-for-pound women's boxer and the current undisputed women's heavyweight champion, made a triumphant return to the middleweight division. On Saturday night at State Farm Arena in Atlanta, Shields secured a dominant sixth-round TKO victory over Kaye Scott, successfully reclaiming the WBC and WBA middleweight championships.
This fight marked Shields' first appearance at middleweight since 2023, when she was the undisputed champion of the 160-pound division. Despite dropping down three weight classes and undergoing an arduous training camp where she cut an impressive 38 pounds, from 198 pounds to 160, Shields demonstrated her exceptional discipline and sharp form. She described the weight cut as the most disciplined she had been since her Olympic campaigns.
Throughout the bout, Shields, also known as "The GWOAT" (Greatest Woman Of All Time), systematically outclassed and overpowered Scott. Although Scott, making her first title defense, bravely stood her ground and attempted to slug it out, Shields' superior power and accuracy proved overwhelming. By early in Round 2, Scott already had a noticeable welt on her forehead, indicative of Shields' relentless precision.
Shields maintained full control of the fight, culminating in the sixth round when a hellacious left hook sent Scott stumbling against the ropes, forcing her to take a count. With Scott visibly hurt and on shaky legs, Shields pressed for the finish. Scott's corner subsequently threw in the towel, and the referee officially halted the bout at 1 minute, 38 seconds of the sixth round.
Reflecting on the fight, Shields admitted she was initially trying to "figure her out," acknowledging Scott's surprising strength. She was cautious not to exert too much early, given her significant weight cut, and focused on managing Scott's power while avoiding any dangerous counters. Shields has previously fought at heavyweight in her four preceding fights, including a unanimous decision win over Franchon Crews-Dezurn in February.
A five-division champion and a two-time Olympic gold medalist (2012 and 2016), Shields holds the unique distinction of being the only woman to be an undisputed champion across three weight classes, having also held the undisputed title at junior middleweight. Looking ahead, Shields expressed her desire to fight unified welterweight champion Lauren Price and also mentioned Tamm Thibeault, who holds the WBO and IBF middleweight belts, as potential future opponents.
