Culture Shift at Nottingham Forest: Nuno Sacked, Ex-Australia Coach Set to Take Reins!

Nottingham Forest is undergoing a profound and sudden transformation, with the departure of head coach Nuno Espirito Santo and the anticipated arrival of Ange Postecoglou. This change marks a radical shift in footballing philosophy, moving from Nuno’s risk-averse, counter-attacking “Nuno-ball” to Postecoglou’s defence-averse, possession-dominant “Ange-ball.” This feels akin to a complete reversal of the club’s established culture and attitude, a significant gamble by owner Evangelos Marinakis given Nuno’s recent success in galvanizing his squad.
Nuno Espirito Santo’s tenure at the City Ground, which began in December 2023 as he replaced Steve Cooper, was largely successful. He inherited a team struggling with relegation and transformed them into a side that achieved European football for the first time in nearly 30 years, narrowly missing out on a Champions League spot in the past season. His overall record of 26 wins in 62 Premier League matches, securing 91 points, demonstrated his ability to forge a cohesive unit. Last season, Forest exemplified Nuno’s tactical approach, characterized by a defensive blanket, the guile of players like Morgan Gibbs-White and Elliot Anderson, the transition pace of Anthony Elanga, and a prolific Chris Wood. This strategy saw them take four points off Liverpool, draw with Arsenal and Chelsea, and beat both Spurs and Manchester United twice.
Despite being rewarded with a new three-year deal until 2028, Nuno’s relationship with Marinakis reportedly deteriorated. He expressed feeling unheard, noting that their once close and trusting relationship had become distant. The rift is rumored to have intensified following the appointment of Edu Gaspar as Forest's global head of football in July, which reportedly reduced Nuno’s influence over transfer decisions. This summer alone saw the club spend over £190 million on new players, including Omari Hutchinson, Arnaud Kalimuendo, and James McAtee, leading to further tensions that culminated in Nuno's dismissal on September 8, 2025.
Ange Postecoglou, who is expected to take over, returns to English football just 95 days after being sacked by Tottenham Hotspur. His Spurs exit ironically followed closely on the heels of Daniel Levy’s departure from N17. At Tottenham, Postecoglou garnered a mixed legacy; he ended the club's 17-year trophy drought with a Europa League win over Manchester United, but also saw the team slump to 17th in the Premier League in his second season. His first season, however, was initially hailed as a breath of fresh air with
