Cotton Craze! African States Race to Spin Up Jobs in Value Chain Boom

The Agriculture and Food Authority (AFA) has identified the cotton sector as a crucial pillar for the national economy, emphasizing its significant potential to generate employment opportunities, particularly for the youth across the country. This significant declaration was made by AFA Chairman Cornelly Serem during a recent stakeholders' forum held in Lamu County, where discussions centered on unlocking the full value of agricultural sectors in Kenya.
Chairman Serem highlighted that the entire cotton value chain, from cultivation and harvesting to processing and manufacturing, presents a fertile ground for job creation. This focus on youth employment through the cotton industry is seen as a strategic initiative to address the challenges of unemployment and foster economic empowerment among young Kenyans, thereby contributing positively to the broader socio-economic development goals of the nation.
Furthermore, AFA outlined practical strategies to bolster the domestic cotton industry and promote the consumption of locally produced goods. The Authority specifically pinpointed public sector workers and educational institutions, such as schools, as readily accessible and impactful markets. By actively encouraging these large segments of the population to embrace and utilize locally manufactured garments, a consistent and robust demand can be cultivated. This approach is intended to create a sustainable ecosystem that supports local farmers, manufacturers, and the overall textile industry, driving economic growth and self-reliance within Kenya's cotton sector.
