Combat Sports Collision: Jake Paul and Francis Ngannou's 'Disrespect' Ignites Feud
YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul has ignited a new controversy following the cancellation of his highly anticipated exhibition bout against world champion Gervonta Davis, originally scheduled for November 14. The Davis fight had already generated significant debate due to a substantial weight disparity, with Davis fighting at 135lbs and Paul typically around 200lbs. With that fight off, Paul's search for a new opponent led to an unexpected inquiry that has drawn sharp criticism from former UFC heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou.
Ngannou, who has faced elite heavyweights like Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury in the boxing ring, most recently competed at 256lbs, a weight dramatically higher than Paul's typical fighting weight and approximately 120lbs heavier than Gervonta Davis. Ngannou confirmed to TMZ that he received an inquiry from Paul's team about a potential fight. "No, there is no such thing happening," Ngannou stated, expressing his confusion. "How can they go from Gervonta Davis to Francis Ngannou? Davis is a fantastic boxer and a one-shot knockout artist. But come on, the weight difference makes no sense. For me, it makes no sense."
Recounting the interaction, Ngannou explained that Paul's team reached out looking for a replacement for Gervonta. After initially struggling to understand their intent, he was eventually told they were considering him to fight Jake Paul. Ngannou's response was direct: "No, bro, come on. Don't disrespect me like that. It's not about the number. I am not interested. It makes no sense." This accusation of "disrespect" highlights the perceived vast difference in experience and weight class between the two fighters.
Jake Paul quickly retaliated on social media, writing, "Dear Francis - just say you already got humiliated in boxing and are scared to lose to Jake Paul. I accept that. You are light work my friend. Stuck in mud." Ngannou, not one to back down, promptly replied, "Choose your words wisely boy. I agree that you need someone to discipline you for what you did to Mike Tyson, but stay in your lane."
Both individuals boast notable, albeit different, combat sports pedigrees. Jake Paul has amassed a boxing record of 12 wins out of 13 fights, including a victory against boxing legend Mike Tyson. Francis Ngannou rose to prominence as the top heavyweight in the UFC before transitioning to professional boxing, where he earned widespread respect for knocking down Tyson Fury in his debut, despite losing on points. He subsequently suffered a knockout loss to Anthony Joshua. Paul has also previously indicated interest in a potential fight with former heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua, further suggesting his ambitions in the heavyweight boxing scene.
