Claw Clips Under Scrutiny: Experts Warn of Hair Damage and Safety Risks

Claw clips have gained significant popularity in the fashion and beauty world, often seen as a convenient and stylish way to keep hair out of the way. Their effectiveness and ability to add a fun element to an outfit have led many to believe they are a safe option for tresses. However, recent insights from experts and real-life incidents suggest that these trendy hair accessories may not be as innocuous as they seem.
According to trichologist Rachel Valentine, who shares her expertise on TikTok under the username @rachelvalentinehair, the widespread use of claw clip hairstyles is contributing to hair damage, specifically breakage around the crown area.

Valentine explains that while claw clips are often perceived as a healthier alternative for putting hair up, the core issue lies not in the clip itself, but in the repetitive nature of wearing the same hairstyle. She warns that any repetitive hairstyle, especially when tight, creates constant tension on the same area of the hair, inevitably leading to breakage over time.
To mitigate this damage, Valentine advises varying hairstyles daily. She suggests rotating between a claw clip one day, a silk scrunchie the next, wearing hair high or low, and even leaving it down. This practice, she explains, helps to spread the tension across different sections of the hair, preventing concentrated stress on any single area and thereby reducing the risk of breakage. Her informative video on the subject quickly garnered significant attention online, with many viewers expressing surprise and concern.
Beyond aesthetic damage, claw clips pose a more serious physical risk, particularly for drivers. Jeena Panesar issued an urgent warning after being involved in a severe car crash where her claw clip became deeply embedded in the back of her head.
During the accident, the impact caused the clip to ram into her skull, leaving her unable to move and resulting in a 30cm cut from her left eyebrow to the back of her head, which doctors suspect was caused by the car roof. Panesar recounted the foggy driving conditions that led to her car flipping 50 metres after hitting what she believes was a gully.

Panesar's harrowing experience led her to advise all drivers to remove their hair claw clips before getting behind the wheel. She emphasized her extreme luck in surviving such a severe injury and urged others not to take the same risk.
This incident highlights a critical safety concern, turning a seemingly harmless accessory into a potential hazard in the event of an accident. Both expert advice on hair health and real-world safety warnings underscore the need for caution when using claw clips, prompting a reevaluation of their perceived all-around safety.
