Chaos Erupts: IShowSpeed's Controversial Nigeria Visit Ignites Peller Feud, Fan Outrage, and Assault Claims!

The visit of American streamer Darren Watkins Jr., popularly known as IShowSpeed, to Lagos, Nigeria, drew unprecedented crowds and intense social media attention. Public appearances required heavy security, while numerous local content creators vied for limited opportunities to interact with the streamer. Among those who succeeded was Nigerian creator Kuye Adegoke, known as Egungun of Lagos, whose brief interview with IShowSpeed quickly went viral. During the exchange, Egungun asked his age—he responded, “I’m 21”—and complimented him, saying, “Wooh! You look so strong and healthy.” The remark drew criticism online, which Egungun later attributed to the tension of the high-pressure encounter.
Controversies Mar Visit
The visit was overshadowed by a serious allegation of sexual assault. A Nigerian woman accused members of IShowSpeed’s security team of groping her while she attempted to push through the crowd on January 21. In a circulating video, she claimed that her chest was grabbed but could not identify any individual responsible.
Criticism also came from public figures. BBNaija star Tochi questioned the enthusiasm of Nigerian youths, highlighting the contrast between their excitement for the streamer and the urgent need for employment.
Local streamer Peller faced public embarrassment during repeated attempts to meet IShowSpeed. Security blocked him multiple times, leading him to climb onto the streamer’s vehicle and later mount a horse to attract attention, all of which went unacknowledged. Social media users noted the irony, as a prior video showed Peller mocking IShowSpeed, claiming he would “snub” him if ever approached in Nigeria.
Cultural Exchange and Viral Moments
Amidst controversies, IShowSpeed engaged in a light-hearted cultural exchange at the Nike Gallery in Lagos. A gallery guide, Allyson-Aina Davies, playfully suggested that IShowSpeed displayed Yoruba-style movements, humorously dismissing his suggestion that he might be Igbo. The guide even proposed an ancestry test and assigning him a traditional Yoruba name, generating viral content online.
Overall, IShowSpeed’s visit became a multifaceted event in Lagos, blending viral interviews, serious allegations, social media debates, and cultural interactions, highlighting the diverse reactions his presence evoked across Nigeria.
