Celtics Dominate Embiid's Return, Seize Series Control!

Philadelphia 76ers star Joel Embiid made an unexpected return to the court on Sunday night, less than three weeks after undergoing an emergency appendectomy. Despite his presence, the Boston Celtics delivered a decisive 128-96 victory, pushing the 76ers to the brink of elimination with a 3-1 lead in their Eastern Conference first-round series. Embiid's return, initially listed as doubtful for Game 3 and then Game 4, was confirmed just an hour before tipoff, igniting excitement among the home crowd at Xfinity Mobile Arena.
Embiid recounted the challenging three weeks leading up to his return, explaining that he initially mistook his symptoms for food poisoning before discovering it was appendicitis. He also mentioned undisclosed complications from the surgery and had only one scrimmage session before stepping back onto the court. “I was like, 'Something is very wrong here,'” Embiid stated, recalling the night he sought medical attention. Despite his health challenges, Embiid started the game strong, scoring Philadelphia's first eight points through a combination of free throws, a fast-break dunk, and a post move.
However, the early surge of good feelings quickly dissipated. The Celtics, spearheaded by Payton Pritchard, took control of the game. Pritchard's 3-pointer initiated a dominant 22-5 run to end the first quarter, giving Boston a commanding 34-18 lead. Pritchard, who led the Celtics with 32 points and made 11 3-pointers across the two games in Philadelphia, emphasized playing with aggression. The 76ers struggled significantly, failing to hit their fifth 3-pointer or grab their first offensive rebound until midway through the third quarter, and Tyrese Maxey took only three shots in the first half, which he described as “absolutely unacceptable.”
Coach Nick Nurse acknowledged his team's defensive struggles, stating, “It just didn't seem like any matchup could guard anybody one-on-one tonight.” The lopsided loss overshadowed Embiid's comeback, adding another chapter to his history of playoff ailments, which include Bell's palsy, knee injuries, and a fractured orbital bone in previous seasons.
Now facing elimination, the 76ers must win Game 5 in Boston on Tuesday night to extend their season. The Celtics have demonstrated significant dominance from beyond the arc, holding a staggering plus-87 edge in 3-pointers over four games and attempting 65 more triples than Philadelphia. Jayson Tatum, who contributed 30 points, seven rebounds, and 11 assists for the Celtics, underscored his team's mindset: “We want to be the more desperate team.” Embiid remains hopeful, noting that a 3-1 deficit has been overcome before, and the team aims to learn from their mistakes and push the series back in their favor with a game under his belt.
