Severe flooding has wreaked havoc across parts of Samreboi and Asankragwa within the Wassa Amenfi West Municipality of Ghana's Western Region. The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has confirmed that over 24 buildings have succumbed to the floodwaters, highlighting the extensive damage incurred by the affected communities.
The devastating floods were primarily triggered by the relentless overflow of the Samre and Tano rivers, a direct consequence of heavy and sustained rainfall in the area. This surge in water levels led to the inundation of numerous low-lying communities, resulting in the displacement of countless residents and widespread destruction of homes and personal property.
Elvis Koffie, the Municipal Director of NADMO, provided an update to Accra-based Citi News, confirming the significant scale of the damage. He reassuringly stated that despite the extensive destruction to infrastructure and property, no fatalities have been recorded thus far, a testament to timely alerts and potentially effective evacuation efforts. Mr. Koffie elaborated that the intense rainfall caused both rivers to breach their banks, sending torrents of floodwater through residential areas and leaving many families stranded.
In response to the crisis, authorities have swiftly moved to relocate affected residents to designated safe shelters. Emergency assessments are currently underway to ascertain the full extent of the damage, while critical response efforts continue to unfold. Mr. Koffie affirmed NADMO's commitment, stating, "We have a safe place for them which they are currently living with their families." He further noted that NADMO is actively collaborating with the Municipal Assembly and other key stakeholders to provide essential relief and support to the victims. The organisation has also significantly intensified its monitoring activities in the affected regions to manage the ongoing emergency operations effectively.

Their requests include crucial relief items such as food, bedding, and other humanitarian aid necessary for daily survival.
