Victory for Students: Kaduna University Lecturers End Protracted Strike!

The Kaduna State University (KASU) chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has officially suspended its strike action. This decision follows significant approvals from both the state government and the university's governing bodies, aimed at resolving long-standing issues concerning staff welfare and agreements.

The suspension comes after Governor Senator Uba Sani granted approval for the implementation of the 2025 FGN/ASUU agreement. Concurrently, the University Governing Council and Management also approved the commencement of payment for nine months of accrued arrears, specifically covering the period from January to September 2027. These developments were announced in a statement released by the ASUU-KASU chairman, Comrade Abubakar Abdullahi, and secretary, Comrade Silas Amos Bakut, to newsmen in Kaduna.

According to the statement, a Congress meeting was held on Thursday, September 17, 2026, where members thoroughly deliberated on the approvals received from the Kaduna State Government and the KASU Council. Following these discussions, the Congress unanimously resolved to accept the offers presented. Consequently, the ongoing strike action was suspended, effective 12:01 am on September 18, 2026.

The union expressed profound gratitude to Governor Senator Uba Sani for his crucial approval of the 2025 FGN/ASUU Agreement's implementation at KASU. ASUU-KASU believes this gesture, among other initiatives, underscores the Governor's dedication to maintaining KASU's position as a leading university in Nigeria, particularly in upholding staff welfare standards.

Furthermore, ASUU-KASU commended the members of the Government Negotiation Team for their unwavering dedication, commitment, and prompt attention to the complex issues under consideration. The union also extended its appreciation to the Management of Kaduna State University for providing essential information, documents, and support to both the Government Negotiation Team and the ASUU-KASU Team, which were instrumental in reaching a resolution.

Most notably, the union acknowledged and praised the Government and KASU Management for their exemplary patience, restraint, and understanding demonstrated throughout the duration of the strike action. The statement highlighted a significant departure from past experiences, noting that neither the union nor its members were subjected to threats or intimidation during the dispute. This approach, allowing ASUU to exhaust its established internal procedures for both commencing and suspending the strike, was viewed as a positive demonstration of respect for due process, constructive engagement, and healthy industrial relations.
