Carrick’s Unbeaten Start Ends With Late Newcastle Defeat

Manchester United’s seven-game unbeaten run under Michael Carrick ended with a 2-1 defeat against Newcastle United at St James’ Park. Substitute William Osula sealed victory in the 90th minute despite Newcastle playing with 10 men after Jacob Ramsey’s red card.

Carrick described the performance as the worst of his tenure so far. The United coach admitted the loss was painful after a strong run of results.

“Disappointed obviously. Bitterly disappointed. It hurts tonight,” Carrick said after the match. The former United midfielder acknowledged the team could have performed much better despite their recent form.

Results elsewhere in the Premier League provided a slight boost for United. Aston Villa’s defeat to Chelsea ensured the club retained third place in the standings.

United remain level on 51 points with Aston Villa but hold a superior goal difference. The result keeps Carrick’s side firmly in Champions League qualification territory.

Carrick took charge in January after the dismissal of Ruben Amorim, with Darren Fletcher briefly overseeing the team beforehand. His arrival sparked an immediate revival, including wins against Manchester City and Arsenal.

The manager has repeatedly stressed a “one match at a time” approach as the season enters its final stretch. United next host AFC Bournemouth on Sunday as Carrick looks to restart the club’s momentum.
