Cambridgeshire Train Terror: Hero Staffer Fights for Life After Tackling Attacker

A mass stabbing incident aboard an LNER high-speed train traveling between Peterborough and Huntingdon in Cambridgeshire on Saturday evening left 11 people hospitalized, with two initially in life-threatening condition. The incident prompted a significant police response, including the arrest of a 32-year-old British national from Peterborough on suspicion of attempted murder. A 35-year-old Briton initially arrested was later released after being cleared of involvement. Five people have since been discharged from hospital.
The British Transport Police (BTP) deputy chief constable, Stuart Cundy, lauded the actions of an LNER staff member as “nothing short of heroic.” CCTV footage shows this staff member intervening to stop the attacker, an act which undoubtedly saved lives, though it resulted in the staff member sustaining life-threatening injuries. This individual's family is receiving support from specialist officers.
The train's driver, Andrew Johnson, a Royal Navy and Iraq War veteran from Peterborough, was also praised for his quick thinking. Upon being alerted to the attack, Johnson rapidly diverted the 6:25 PM service from Doncaster to London King's Cross to Huntingdon station. This crucial decision allowed him to stop the train at a platform, ensuring emergency services could access the scene swiftly rather than attempting to stop between stations. Johnson, who has been a train driver since 2018 and served 17 years in the Royal Navy, downplayed his own heroism, stating, “I was only doing my job,” and redirected praise to his injured colleague.
Witnesses described a “terrifying” 14-15 minutes after the train left Peterborough, with bloodied victims running through carriages. Olly Foster, a passenger in coach H, recounted hearing warnings of a man “stabbing everyone,” initially questioning if it was a Halloween prank but quickly realizing the gravity of the situation from people's panicked faces. Another passenger reported seeing an
