CAF Official Breaks Silence Amid South Africa's Fiery Challenge for 2026 WAFCON Hosting Rights!

The 2026 Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON 2026) has been shrouded in uncertainty for over six weeks, as doubts persist regarding its host nation. Morocco was initially slated to host the tournament for what would be their third consecutive time. However, following the contentious conclusion of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in January, which was marred by perceived favoritism towards the hosts, speculation intensified that Morocco might withdraw from its WAFCON commitment.
Despite CAF President Patrice Motsepe's earlier announcement that the tournament would proceed in Morocco, rumors of a potential withdrawal have not subsided. This prolonged uncertainty has led to strong reactions from South African Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, who has openly accused Morocco of holding the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to ransom. McKenzie's vocal support for CAF is anticipated, given that President Motsepe is a fellow South African.
During a press conference, McKenzie acknowledged Morocco's impressive hosting of the AFCON 2025 but sharply criticized their wavering commitment to WAFCON 2026, viewing it as an attempt to undermine CAF and President Motsepe. He firmly stated South Africa's readiness to step in as host, emphasizing the Rainbow Nation's world-class infrastructure. McKenzie declared, "If Morocco is ready to host the WAFCON because they had a brilliant AFCON, they should do so. But if they are not ready, we want to tell them, we (South Africa) are not a country with no stadiums, a country that doesn’t host games, we are not a country with less infrastructure. We will never be held hostage by countries that have less than what we have." He further stressed that South Africa would not allow women's football to be treated disrespectfully or to wait for other nations.
These accusations from McKenzie are significant, especially as President Motsepe has not publicly commented on any alleged pressure from Morocco. It is hypothesized that Morocco's perceived unfavorable outcome in the recent AFCON might have contributed to a desire to reconsider its CAF responsibilities. Nonetheless, from a political perspective, Morocco has invested heavily in establishing itself as a global football hub, making a withdrawal from hosting a major tournament a potentially damaging move to its standing within African football politics.
The ongoing lack of clarity has raised concerns for participating nations, including the Super Falcons of Nigeria. As the defending champions, Nigeria will carry the burden of expectation to secure their 11th title, having defeated Morocco in the previous final. With the scheduled April kickoff approaching, the uncertainty risks disrupting the preparation phases for many teams. However, the Super Falcons, well-versed in the African football landscape, are expected to maintain their focus.
Amidst these tensions, CAF communications officer Luxolo September announced that the governing body would communicate its decision regarding the WAFCON 2026 host within 48 hours. September confirmed that the issue has been subject to extensive discussions for weeks and is receiving urgent, high-level attention, promising an end to the weeks of speculation for teams, organizers, and broadcasters.
