Massive UK Development: Andy Burnham Unveils Stockport's Future with 4,000 New Homes

Proposals to construct 4,000 new residences in Stockport have progressed significantly as part of an ambitious £2 billion masterplan designed to transform the town. A specific area of focus for Stockport council's regeneration efforts includes 22 acres of land situated to the east of the town centre, stretching along the River Goyt. This development is envisioned to deliver not only new homes but also new green spaces and enhanced connectivity within the area.
On September 1, Stockport council officially announced the appointment of real estate company CBRE to formulate a comprehensive delivery plan for the Town Centre East Strategy Regeneration Framework (TCESRF). This initiative will be carried out in collaboration with the Stockport Mayoral Development Corporation, described as a crucial catalyst for much of the ongoing work in the town. Out of the council's broader goal of delivering 8,000 homes across Stockport, 4,000 are specifically slated for this particular area. These plans include the creation of new green spaces along the river, which are intended to form a 'valuable green oasis'. Further amenities under consideration for the area include a new school, a dedicated healthcare hub, new retail outlets, and a new bridge.
The geographical scope of the regeneration plan encompasses the Merseyway shopping centre, extends through the town centre up to the motorway, and reaches the Peel Retail Park to the east. Previous plans drafted by Stockport council have indicated the inclusion of higher-rise blocks within the proposed developments. The council articulated its vision, stating: “The area has the potential to become a distinctive neighbourhood that combines high-quality homes, including homes for families, alongside attractive green spaces and improved walking and cycling routes.” The overarching objective is to “create a new riverside community that makes the most of its setting, supports biodiversity and flood resilience, and strengthens links with surrounding neighbourhoods and the wider town centre.”
Andy Burnham, during his tenure as Mayor of Greater Manchester, lauded the TCESRF as ‘a blueprint for the future of urban living’ and ‘a place where innovation meets community, where sustainability is a way of life, and where people are proud to belong’.
