Cabinet Shake-Up: Tinubu Removes Ministers, Presidency Explains Edun, Dangiwa Exits!

The Nigerian Federal Executive Council has recently undergone a significant cabinet reshuffle, marked by the departure of two key ministers: Mr. Wale Edun, the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister for the Economy, and Mr. Ahmed Musa Dangiwa, the Minister of Housing and Urban Development. Initially reported as removals by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, a statement from the Special Adviser, Media and Publicity to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Yomi Odunuga, referenced a memo from Senator George Akume confirming the changes. The memo directed Edun to hand over to the Minister of State in the Ministry of Finance, Taiwo Oyedele, who was named the substantive Minister of Finance, while Muttaqha Rabe Darma (PhD) was nominated as the Minister Designate for the Housing and Urban Development Ministry, with Dangiwa also directed to hand over to the Minister of State in his ministry. All handover processes were ordered to be completed on or before Thursday, April 23, 2026. According to Akume, these changes were intended to strengthen cohesion and synergy in governance, and to achieve more impactful delivery on the economy for Nigerians through the administration's Renewed Hope Agenda, with President Tinubu exercising powers conferred by Sections 147 and 148 of the Constitution. The President thanked the outgoing ministers and wished them well, assuring continuous reinvigoration of the cabinet.
However, the Presidency later clarified that both Wale Edun and Ahmed Musa Dangiwa voluntarily resigned from their positions, rather than being removed. This clarification, reiterated by presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga, emphasized that their exits followed due process. Official sources indicated that Mr. Edun tendered his resignation to President Tinubu on health grounds prior to the announcement of his replacement. Having turned 70, Edun reportedly faced recent health challenges and chose to step down to focus on recovery and private engagements. In his resignation letter, submitted on his birthday, Edun expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve, stating, "It has been a pleasure and privilege to serve your administration and the Renewed Hope Agenda. Under your leadership, Nigeria has emerged stronger, more resilient and more internationally respected. I wish you and the administration every success in the future." Before the formal announcement of his departure, Edun held a closed-door valedictory meeting with the President at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
Similarly, Mr. Dangiwa also voluntarily resigned, conveying his thanks to the President for the opportunity to serve in the Federal Executive Council. An architect by profession, Dangiwa had a distinguished public service career, including serving as Managing Director of the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria from 2015 to 2022 and as Secretary to the Katsina State Government, prior to his ministerial appointment in August 2023. Mr. Edun, a seasoned investment banker and economist, had previously served as Commissioner for Finance in Lagos State from 1999 to 2004 during President Tinubu’s tenure as governor. His extensive career includes roles at Chase Merchant Bank, the World Bank, and co-founding Investment Banking & Trust Company (now Stanbic IBTC), as well as establishing Denham Management Limited, which evolved into the Chapelhill Denham Group. President Tinubu acknowledged their departures, commending both ministers for their dedication and significant contributions to the administration’s economic and housing reforms, and wishing them continued success.
Following the resignations, President Tinubu has directed the new Minister of Finance, Taiwo Oyedele, to consolidate ongoing reforms and advance the administration’s fiscal and economic objectives with renewed focus, discipline, and innovation. For the Housing Ministry, Muttaqha Rabe Darma, also from Katsina, has been named as a ministerial nominee, with his confirmation expected to be forwarded to the Senate in the coming days.
In contrast to the official narrative of voluntary resignations due to health, SaharaReporters had previously reported that President Tinubu had replaced Edun. This report emerged amid concerns over Edun’s health and disturbing revelations about alleged security threats, including a purported coup plot within the Nigerian military. According to insider sources cited by SaharaReporters, Edun fell seriously ill on the eve of a scheduled trip to Washington, D.C., for the World Bank Fall Meetings. His collapse was reportedly triggered by a security briefing that his name was number four on a "kill list" allegedly compiled by military officers accused of plotting to overthrow Tinubu’s administration. Although government officials initially denied that Edun was flown abroad for treatment, he was later sighted in the United Kingdom, where sources noted his physically weak appearance, suggesting a more complex reason behind his sudden exit than purely health-related retirement.
