Breaking: Shocking Attack on Peter Obi in Benue Leaves Over 10 Hospitalized

More than ten youths sustained injuries and were subsequently admitted to the Benue State University Teaching Hospital (BSUTH) in Makurdi, following an attack on the convoy of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, on Tuesday. The incident occurred along the Gboko-Makurdi Expressway, effectively preventing Peter Obi from reaching Yelwata in Guma Local Government Area. Obi was en route to Yelwata to express solidarity with victims of a terrorist attack that took place on June 13, 2025.

Following the attack, Peter Obi accused the Special Assistant to Governor Hyacinth Alia on Youths of orchestrating the assault and mobilizing young individuals to obstruct his movement. Obi had arrived in Makurdi, the state capital, earlier that Tuesday before proceeding towards Yelwata when his convoy came under attack.

A BSUTH official, speaking anonymously on Wednesday, confirmed that over ten wounded youths were brought to the hospital for urgent medical care. The official stated, "Over 10 wounded victims were brought in here yesterday for urgent medical attention. They are being treated. I don’t know where they came from. We don’t know whether they were involved in Peter Obi’s incident yesterday or not. What we know is that they are accident victims and they are being treated. They are responding to treatment and none of them died." Efforts to obtain an official statement from the Chief Medical Director of BSUTH, Dr. Stephen Hwande, were unsuccessful.

However, contradicting the hospital official's statement, Agile-Bem Jabez Ordedoo, the NDC Benue State publicity secretary, issued a statement on Wednesday claiming that one of the alleged attackers had died while receiving treatment at the hospital. Ordedoo stated, "We regret to announce to you that one amongst the young men sponsored to attack the Presidential and Governorship candidates of NDC has passed on this morning at teaching hospital, Makurdi." He further added that the deceased had been moved to the mortuary, while others remained in critical condition in the hospital’s emergency ward. The NDC spokesperson also noted that treatment for some injured youths was delayed due to the absence of their parents.

At the time of filing this report, the Benue State Police Command spokesperson, DSP Peter Orchia Aondongu, could not be reached for comment, and the circumstances surrounding the injuries and the alleged death remained independently unconfirmed.
