Boxing Drama Erupts: Eubank Jr. & Benn Fathers Clash, Demons Surface for Rematch
The highly anticipated boxing rematch between Conor Benn and Chris Eubank Jr. is set to take place on Saturday at London's Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. This fight comes after the original bout, scheduled for April, was initially cancelled in 2022 when Benn (23-1, 14 KOs) failed two drug tests, casting a long shadow over the rivalry.
Following two years of legal battles, Benn was eventually cleared to fight in the UK in 2024. However, the 29-year-old boxer has been open about the significant toll this process took on him and his family. In a 2023 interview, he revealed that he had at one point felt suicidal during the ordeal, throughout which he consistently maintained his innocence and denied any wrongdoing. Leading up to the April fight, Benn described feeling "disturbed and angry" and finding it challenging to confront his "demons." He has since undergone therapy and stated he feels mentally refreshed and better prepared for this rematch, acknowledging that a strong mind is crucial in such physically demanding sport.
The build-up to the rescheduled fight has been intensely personal and often toxic, highlighting the deep animosity between the two fighters. A notable incident involved Eubank Jr. (35-3, 25 KOs) slapping his rival across the face with an egg during a news conference, further fueling the rivalry.
Adding another layer of historical intensity to the event, the pre-fight news conference saw the fathers of the combatants, Chris Eubank Sr. and Nigel Benn, take center stage. Their own iconic British boxing rivalry from the 1990s, which included a knockout win for Eubank Sr. in 1990 and a draw three years later, was a significant highlight. Eubank Sr., whose relationship with his son had been strained, made a surprise appearance at the first fight in April and was prominently featured at the recent news conference, walking on stage to his old ring walk music. The two former rivals engaged in a public exchange, with Eubank Sr. addressing accusations that he was paid to attend the April fight, asserting his principled stance against such claims. Nigel Benn, however, dismissed Senior's comments, stating his focus remained solely on his son and Chris Jr.'s fight. Despite the verbal sparring, both fathers shook hands after a face-off, setting the stage for their sons' impending battle.
While focused on the immediate rematch, Conor Benn has expressed his readiness to move past the Eubank rivalry to pursue world titles at welterweight, with aspirations to eventually move up to junior middleweight.
