Beloved 'Fawlty Towers' Star Prunella Scales Passes Away at 93

Prunella Scales, the acclaimed actress widely celebrated for her iconic portrayal of Sybil Fawlty in the beloved television series Fawlty Towers, has passed away peacefully at her London home at the age of 93. Her family confirmed her death in a statement, noting she had been watching Fawlty Towers the day before she died. Despite dementia forcing her retirement from a remarkable acting career spanning nearly 70 years, she continued to live at home, surrounded by loved ones.
Scales was married to her fellow actor, Timothy West, for 61 years. West passed away in November 2024 at the age of 90. She is survived by their two sons, one stepdaughter, seven grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. One of her sons, Samuel West, followed in his parents' footsteps as an actor and director.
Renowned as one of the most accomplished and cherished comedy performers of her era, Scales gained international stardom and critical acclaim as Sybil, the enduring spouse of Basil Fawlty, in the unforgettable series Fawlty Towers, often hailed as one of the funniest television series ever broadcast. While frequently cast in comedic roles, her talents were extensive and diverse, even extending to the opera stage where she notably lent her voice (or rather, a 'caw') to the character of Magpie in Gioachino Rossini's La Gazza Ladra in 2003.
Her versatility was evident in her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth II in the British film A Question Of Attribution, and in her solo performance titled An Evening With Queen Victoria. Born Prunella Margaret Rumney Illingworth on June 22, 1932, she received her education at Moira House Girls' School in Eastbourne, East Sussex. Her early career included roles in the 1952 UK adaptation of Pride And Prejudice and Hobson's Choice in 1954.
Scales achieved her significant breakthrough in the early 1960s sitcom Marriage Lines, where she starred opposite Richard Briers. Her extensive work in radio included roles in BBC Radio 4 sitcoms such as After Henry, Smelling Of Roses, and Ladies Of Letters. On television, she featured in the London Weekend/Channel 4 series Mapp and Lucia, based on EF Benson's novels, and teamed up with Ronnie Barker in the 1973 BBC series Seven Of One. In 2003, she took on the role of Hilda, Horace Rumpole's wife in four BBC Radio 4 plays, with her real-life husband Timothy West playing her fictional spouse. She also appeared alongside Oscar winners Vanessa Redgrave and Maximilian Schell in the 2006 mini-series The Shell Seekers. In 2007, she reprised her role as Sybil Fawlty for Children in Need, appearing as the new manager keen on taking over Hotel Babylon. Later works included the audio play The Youth of Old Age in 2008 and a production of Nina Bawden's novel Carrie's War at the Apollo Theatre in 2009.
In January 2013, Prunella Scales disclosed that her short-term memory was deteriorating, and a year later, Timothy West confirmed she was living with Alzheimer's disease. West openly discussed his wife's condition, noting the gradual disappearance of the person he knew and loved, and the challenges her hazy memory posed in sharing experiences like concerts or films. The couple famously featured together in 10 series of Channel 4's Great Canal Journeys from 2014, continuing until Scales' Alzheimer's reportedly advanced, leading them to cease filming in 2020. Their final expedition for the show aired in June 2019, taking them along Vietnam's Mekong Delta and to Cambodia's Angkor Wat. Additional specials reflecting on their adventures were transmitted in 2020, after which Dame Sheila Hancock and Gyles Brandreth assumed control of the series.
Beyond her acting, Scales was a lifelong supporter of the Labour Party, appearing in their political broadcasts during the 2005 and 2010 general election campaigns. She also served as an ambassador for SOS Children's Villages, an international charity dedicated to providing homes and support for orphaned and abandoned children.
