Aviation Bigwigs Converge: IATA Focus Africa Conference Headed to Addis Ababa in 2026!

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has announced that its premier continental gathering, the IATA Focus Africa Conference, will return to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, for its 2026 edition. Scheduled for April 29-30, Ethiopian Airlines will once again serve as the host for this pivotal industry event. The conference aims to unite senior aviation leaders from across the continent to strategize and chart the future development of African air transport, building on the foundation laid since the inaugural conference in 2023.

The chosen theme for the 2026 conference is "Elevating Aviation Safety, Connectivity, and Operational Efficiency in Africa." This theme underscores the critical priorities identified by industry stakeholders for unlocking Africa's vast aviation potential. Kamil Alawadhi, IATA's Regional Vice President for Africa and the Middle East, emphasized that aviation serves as a powerful catalyst for economic and social progress. He highlighted that enhancing safety standards, fostering regulatory harmony across national borders, and reducing operational costs remain at the forefront of the industry's agenda, particularly with annual demand growth projected at three to four percent.

Significant progress has been made since Ethiopian Airlines hosted the first Focus Africa Conference in 2023. These advancements have directly benefited African aviation professionals and passengers alike. Notable achievements include the implementation of API-PNR programmes in twelve African nations, which has bolstered border security while simultaneously streamlining passenger processing. Region-wide safety initiatives have been rolled out, and new settlement operations have been launched in Sierra Leone, South Sudan, Ghana, and Ivory Coast, improving the efficiency of financial transactions between airlines and their commercial partners.

Crucially for frontline travel professionals, IATA Easy Pay has been introduced in several markets, including Cameroon, Chad, Gabon, Congo, Mauritius, and Sierra Leone. This payment solution addresses long-standing challenges in regions where limited payment options previously hampered business growth and created cash flow difficulties for both carriers and sellers.

The conference boasts an impressive lineup of speakers representing the full spectrum of African aviation leadership. Key participants include Dr. Alemu Sime Feyisa, Ethiopia's Minister of Transport and Logistics, and Mesfin Tasew, Group Chief Executive Officer of Ethiopian Airlines. Other prominent airline leaders, such as de Villiers Engelbrecht of Airlink and Captain George Kamal of Kenya Airways, will offer their insights into regional challenges and opportunities. Continental aviation bodies will be strongly represented by figures like Adefunke Adeyemi of the African Civil Aviation Commission and Abderahmane Berthe of the African Airlines Association. Aaron Munetsi from the Airlines Association of Southern Africa and Mohammed Mazi of Saudi Ground Services complete this distinguished roster of industry voices.

Attendees can anticipate a comprehensive program featuring keynote addresses, engaging panel discussions, and detailed technical presentations. Sessions will delve into strategies for safety enhancement through strengthened standards and oversight mechanisms, explore methods for boosting intra-African connectivity, including regulatory harmonisation efforts, and discuss progress towards the Single African Air Transport Market (SAATM). Operational efficiency will also receive significant attention, with discussions focusing on process streamlining, the adoption of digital innovations, and cost reduction across the entire aviation value chain. For African travel trade professionals, the conference offers an invaluable opportunity to grasp the strategic direction of continental aviation and identify emerging business development possibilities. The outcomes of the Addis Ababa gathering are expected to shape the operating environment for years to come, influencing aspects from route availability to ticketing processes and payment solutions.
