Avatar Sequel 'Fire and Ash' Stumbles at Box Office

James Cameron's 'Avatar: Fire and Ash' exited the domestic top 10 after a 10-week run, falling short of its predecessors’ historic success. The original Avatar held the top 10 for 14 weeks and grossed $2.9 billion globally, while Avatar: The Way of Water spent 15 weeks in the top 10 with a $2.3 billion worldwide haul.

The third installment faced challenges in replicating this success, earning a 66% score on Rotten Tomatoes compared to 81% for the original and 76% for The Way of Water. Critics praised its visual spectacle but criticized the repetitive narrative, while neither the Oscars nor major awards recognized it.

Despite underperforming domestically, 'Fire and Ash' surpassed $400 million at home and earned $1.07 billion internationally, for a total of $1.48 billion worldwide. The film’s modest weekend gross of around $4 million suggests the $1.5 billion milestone may be out of reach, ranking it below 2025 Disney hits like Lilo & Stitch and Zootopia 2.

Discussions about the franchise’s future are growing, as James Cameron considers other projects amid the high costs and long production timelines of the series. With a 90% audience score, the film is expected to perform well in PVOD and streaming markets, continuing the story of Jake Sully and Neytiri since The Way of Water’s 2022 release.
