Arsenal VAR Controversy Explodes: Schmeichel Slams 'Wrong' Call in West Ham Clash
The implementation of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system continues to ignite weekly controversies across major football competitions, from the Premier League to the Champions League and FA Cup. This season, particular attention has been drawn to how decisions are made and whether their outcomes align with the laws of the game. Former Select Group referee Andy Davies, with extensive experience in the Premier League and operating within the VAR space, offers a unique insight into the processes and protocols involved.
A recent incident that sparked significant debate occurred in a thrilling Premier League match between West Ham and Arsenal, specifically in the 90+5th minute. West Ham believed they had secured a late equalizer when Callum Wilson struck the ball into the net following a scrappy corner. The ball had fallen to Wilson's feet after Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya fumbled the initial cross. Raya was under physical pressure from West Ham attackers, and he was convinced he had been fouled by West Ham's Pablo during the ball's flight. Referee Chris Kavanagh's initial on-field decision was to award the goal.
However, VAR Darren England initiated a review, believing that Raya had indeed been held by Pablo, and subsequently recommended an on-field review for Kavanagh. England's review process was described as diligent, taking the necessary time to examine replays. This was identified as a challenging check due to four distinct pockets of players requiring analysis for potential infringements. The VAR's judgment focused on the level of contact and whether it materially impacted the opponent's ability to move or play the ball. England concluded that Pablo's arm, positioned unnecessarily across Raya's chest, clearly impeded the goalkeeper's ability to move and catch the ball. This action was deemed to have a direct impact on the outcome of a goal, thus warranting a foul. Upon reviewing the incident at the pitchside monitor, Referee Kavanagh concurred with the VAR's assessment and disallowed the goal.
From the perspective of a former elite referee, this decision was deemed correct and a commendable use of VAR in a highly pressurized moment, with potential implications for the season's outcome. The complexity of the situation, with evidence of several potential holding offenses in a congested penalty area, underscored the skill required of the VAR to pinpoint contact that directly affects a key outcome. The presence of assistant VAR Akil Howson served as a check and balance during the thorough review. It was asserted that Pablo's arm action across Raya's chest unequivocally impacted the goalkeeper's capacity to perform his duties and could not be overlooked. VAR's purpose is to assist match officials in identifying actions missed or physically unobservable in real-time by the on-field team, and this instance was presented as a positive demonstration of the technology at a crucial juncture of the season.
However, the decision was not universally accepted, particularly among prominent football figures. Former Premier League-winning goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel strongly criticized the disallowing of Arsenal's equalizer, branding it the 'wrong one.' Schmeichel, having won multiple titles with Manchester United, ridiculed the decision, stating that Arsenal would 'never be top of the league if that's a free-kick.' He argued that Arsenal frequently benefits from similar actions, blocking and holding opponents, and questioned the legitimacy of the call given the five-minute VAR deliberation. He believed the extensive review time itself cast doubt on the decision's validity, calling it 'so wrong on so many levels' and inconsistent with how such incidents had been officiated throughout the season.
Conversely, notable Premier League winners Alan Shearer and Wayne Rooney supported the decision. Speaking on 'The Rest is Football' podcast, Shearer acknowledged the polarized views but ultimately deemed it a foul. However, he also raised concerns about consistency, citing a similar incident involving Bernardo Silva at Everton where VAR did not intervene. Shearer further criticized the excessive time taken by VAR, despite acknowledging the importance of the decision. On the 'Wayne Rooney Show,' Rooney unequivocally stated, 'It's a clear foul. I think you can clearly see the arm crosses [Raya's] face and it impacts him getting to the ball.' He concluded by saying, 'I think it's the right decision. It's the one time I actually think VAR has done a really good job in such an important game.'
The West Ham vs. Arsenal incident thus encapsulates the ongoing, fervent debate surrounding VAR. While the technology aims to correct clear and obvious errors, its application, the time taken for reviews, and the varying interpretations of fouls continue to be subjects of intense scrutiny and disagreement among fans, pundits, and former players alike.
