Controversial 2026 Romance Movie Defies Backlash to Conquer Global Streaming

Margot Robbie, celebrated for her starring role in the box office phenomenon Barbie, has undoubtedly achieved significant success and popularity. However, her recent cinematic endeavors outside of this billion-dollar hit have faced considerable challenges. Films such as Amsterdam, Babylon, and A Big Bold Beautiful Journey, released within the last four years, all received underwhelming commercial and critical responses.
Earlier this year, Robbie took on a producing role for Emerald Fennell's adaptation of Emily Brontë’s classic novel, Wuthering Heights, in which she also starred alongside Jacob Elordi. Fennell, with whom Robbie previously collaborated as a producer on Saltburn, presented a stylistically distinct interpretation of the source material. The director intentionally indicated this approach by enclosing her film's title in quotation marks, signaling it as a fan-fiction-like take rather than a direct adaptation.
Despite this disclaimer, Fennell's "Wuthering Heights" proved highly divisive upon its debut, drawing strong criticism for its perceived misinterpretation of Brontë's original text. Reviewers were quick to voice their frustrations; for instance, Therese Lacson of Collider awarded the movie a mere 2/10, stating that "Emily Brontë is absolutely rolling in her grave" and describing it as "an adaptation that feels like a 14-year-old skimmed the book and jumped to her own conclusions without any true understanding of the novel." The film ultimately garnered a modest 57% on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, with its visual flair being a key factor in keeping its rating above the halfway mark.
Despite the scathing critical reception, "Wuthering Heights" achieved unexpected commercial success. Released in time for Valentine's Day, the film generated a substantial $241 million worldwide box office haul against a reported budget of $80 million. This included $84 million domestically and $157 million from overseas markets. It held the title of the most-watched theatrical release of 2026 for two weeks before being surpassed by Scream 7. Furthermore, almost three months post-release, the film proved to be a popular streaming choice, officially placing as the most-watched movie on HBO Max globally. The film, categorized as R Drama Romance, has a runtime of 136 minutes, with Emerald Fennell directing and co-writing with Emily Brontë. Producers include Margot Robbie, Tom Ackerley, Emerald Fennell, and Josey McNamara, with Robbie portraying Catherine Earnshaw and Jacob Elordi as Heathcliff.
Beyond film analysis, Collider also presented an engaging interactive feature: a personality quiz titled "Which Iconic Universe Do You Belong in the Most?" This quiz invites readers to discover which of five legendary universes – Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, Game of Thrones, or Star Trek – best aligns with their instincts, values, and way of existing.
The eight-question quiz delves into various aspects of an individual's personality, including their deepest sense of meaning or purpose, the kind of world they wish to inhabit, their preferred method of resolving conflicts, ideal companions, relationship with power, understanding of good and evil, natural role in a narrative, and ultimate beliefs about the future. Each question presents multiple-choice answers, guiding participants toward a specific universe.
The results of the quiz describe the core tenets of each universe and how an individual's alignment manifests. For those belonging in a Galaxy Far, Far Away (Star Wars), it signifies a belief in fighting for freedom and a draw to moral clarity and hope as resistance. Middle-earth (Lord of the Rings) appeals to individuals who value the journey, the world's beauty, friendship, and the accumulation of small acts of courage. The Wizarding World (Harry Potter) is for those who believe in love, loyalty, and doing what's right, valuing learning and strong friendships. Westeros (Game of Thrones) attracts those who view power structures and the world's brutal arithmetic clearly, thriving on intelligence, adaptability, and strategic alliances. Lastly, the United Federation of Planets (Star Trek) is for optimists who believe in building the future through curiosity, cooperation, and the expansion of understanding, embracing challenges to achieve a better civilization.
