Andy Burnham, the high-profile Greater Manchester mayor, has been blocked by Labour's National Executive Committee (NEC) from seeking selection to stand in the Gorton and Denton by-election. The by-election was triggered by the resignation of the sitting MP, Andrew Gwynne, who announced his decision to step down due to "significant ill health" and medical advice. Mr. Gwynne had previously been suspended from the Labour Party following comments made in a WhatsApp group named 'Trigger Me Timbers'. With the seat becoming available, Mr. Burnham, widely seen as a potential rival to Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer for the party's leadership, declared his intention to return to Westminster by submitting a formal request to Labour’s ruling committee.
