The by-election was triggered by the resignation of the sitting MP, Andrew Gwynne, who announced his decision to step down due to "significant ill health" and medical advice. Mr. Gwynne had previously been suspended from the Labour Party following comments made in a WhatsApp group named 'Trigger Me Timbers'.
