Alien: Earth Stars Spill on Episode 7's Terrifying Twists and Iconic Sci-Fi Nods

Episode 7, titled "Emergence," of Noah Hawley's FX series Alien: Earth features significant emotional and dramatic moments, particularly for the characters Slightly, played by Adarsh Gourav, and Arthur Sylvia, portrayed by David Rysdahl. This episode, co-written by Hawley and Maria Melnik and directed by Dana Gonzales, sees Arthur Sylvia become the series' first chestburster victim, a pivotal event that stemmed from Slightly's manipulation by Weyland-Yutani's cyborg security officer, Morrow (Babou Ceesay).
Adarsh Gouravdelved deep into his character, Slightly, an awkward hybrid child suddenly in an adult body. Gourav prepared for the role by reconnecting with his inner child, reflecting on childhood memories, dynamics with parents and friends, and observing children playing. He even participated in sessions with a child psychologist, which included activities like painting, sculpting, and, surprisingly, eating fried crickets in Bangkok to break inhibitions.

Slightly's vulnerability made him an easy target for Morrow, who exploited him to secure alien specimens from Prodigy's lab, ultimately leading to Arthur's tragic end. Slightly's internal turmoil is also linked to a backstory he created for the character, involving a missing father figure, making him constantly search for a replacement, initially in Morrow, then in Arthur.
A notable dynamic highlighted by Gourav is the friendship between Slightly and Smee (Jonathan Ajayi). Despite their differing backgrounds, Gourav and Ajayi formed an instant bond, both on and off-set. They would read scenes, offer feedback, and share childhood stories, which translated into a genuine on-screen chemistry. The episode tests their friendship when Smee discovers Slightly trying to hide Arthur's body, escalating the stakes for both characters.
The physical release Slightly experiences when Kirsh acknowledges his knowledge of the situation resonated with Gourav's own childhood experiences of struggling to keep secrets, which would manifest as physical stomach pains. This sense of relief was crucial for the scene where Slightly finally confesses, as he felt a tremendous burden lifted.
David Rysdahl, who plays Arthur Sylvia, learned of his character's fate early in conversations with Noah Hawley. As an "Alien nerd," Rysdahl was initially excited about the iconic chestburster scene but found the practical experience of wearing a facehugger for eight hours to be genuinely horrifying and physically taxing. He describes how his body's gruelling experience mirrored Arthur's, making his reaction more authentic. Rysdahl and the crew paid homage to John Hurt's original scene in Alien while still imbuing it with Arthur's unique circumstances alongside the two boys on the beach.

A key emotional moment, the hand-holding scene between Arthur, Slightly, and Smee on the beach, was a last-minute addition by Noah Hawley. This scene, not originally scripted, was discovered through listening to each other and bodies, fostering an unexpected intimacy and fatherly affection right before Arthur's death. This scene amplified the impact of the subsequent chestburster, making it even more emotional and shocking for both the characters and the audience. Arthur's breaking point with Prodigy came when Nibs' memory was erased, an act against their established ethics that also created an irreparable rift with his wife, Dame Sylvia.
Filming the scene where Slightly and Smee drag Arthur's body through the lagoon presented its own challenges. Gourav describes the location as an "insane place" in Thailand where water levels rose significantly throughout the day, going from ankle-deep in the morning to neck-deep by evening. This difficult environment, combined with Slightly's deep sense of failure—both in saving his makeshift family and in pleasing Morrow—contributed to the profound defeat and sadness portrayed by Gourav in the scene.
