AFCON Drama: Osimhen-Lookman Showdown Rocks Super Eagles Camp!

Nigeria's Super Eagles secured a resounding 4-0 victory over Mozambique in the round-of-16 of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, sealing their place in the quarter-finals. However, what should have been a celebratory moment was largely overshadowed by dramatic scenes involving star striker Victor Osimhen and teammate Ademola Lookman, leading to an unsettling crisis for the national team.
Early in the match, there was visible chemistry between Osimhen and Lookman. In the 25th minute, Alex Iwobi's sublime pass released Lookman, who then squared the ball for Osimhen to score. The pair celebrated together, sliding across the wet turf alongside Bruno Onyemaechi. Lookman again turned provider after half-time, leaping into Osimhen's arms after setting him up for another goal, underlining their initial attacking synergy.
However, the dynamic quickly shifted as Osimhen grew visibly frustrated. Several attacking moves ended without the ball reaching him, prompting a noticeable change in his demeanor. His anger boiled over when Lookman chose to dribble instead of passing in a promising position. Further instances where Onyemaechi and Akor Adams drove into the box instead of squaring to an unmarked Osimhen exacerbated his frustration.
The tension culminated in a direct confrontation. As Lookman walked to take a corner, Osimhen snapped, squaring up to his teammate and pointing aggressively in his face. Captain Wilfred Ndidi attempted to intervene, but Osimhen slapped his arm away. In a bizarre turn, Mozambique defender Reinildo stepped in to push Osimhen back. Shortly after, Osimhen signaled to the bench that he wished to be substituted and was promptly replaced by Moses Simon, despite Nigeria cruising at 3-0.
The drama continued post-match. Osimhen reportedly walked straight down the tunnel at full time while his teammates and coaching staff formed a huddle on the pitch. He left the dressing room early and was seen sitting alone on the team bus as others remained inside for media duties. Confirmed reports from within the camp indicated that Osimhen stormed out of the stadium, dropped his accreditation, and declared he was “done” with the national team, insisting he would return to Turkey. Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) figures reportedly moved to pacify the striker, though some officials believed he should be left alone to cool off.
Despite the high-stakes situation, both Ademola Lookman and head coach Eric Chelle moved swiftly to defuse tensions. Lookman, speaking after the match, downplayed the incident, stating, “I have not seen him but I don’t really think that is important. The team won 4-0. Vic is our number one guy. Everybody knows this. He is a top striker and a top player. All the rest of that is not important.” He later added, “It’s just football. It’s always football. He is my brother.” Coach Chelle also played down the incident, stating, “What happened on the pitch will stay in the group.” Captain Wilfred Ndidi further emphasized unity, telling reporters, “Everything is fine, everyone is together.”
The confrontation has revived concerns about Osimhen’s temperament, recalling a public clash with former head coach Finidi George in June 2024. This latest episode, however, is viewed by many as a more serious flashpoint, especially given its timing. Lookman has been Nigeria's standout performer at this AFCON, contributing seven direct goal involvements (three goals, four assists), the most in the tournament. Osimhen, adored by fans and nearing Rashidi Yekini’s all-time national scoring record, has cut a more frustrated figure.
Beyond the controversy, Nigeria’s performance boasted numerous positives. Akor Adams capped the win with a goal he dedicated to his hospitalized mother. Alex Iwobi was sublime, delivering two exquisite passes in the build-up to the opening goals. Substitute Fisayo Dele-Bashiru impressed with a lively cameo, and Bruno Onyemaechi solidified his status as first-choice left-back with another assured display.
Media personality Tacha publicly supported Victor Osimhen on her verified X account, criticizing those she felt were unfairly attacking him. She drew a parallel to Cristiano Ronaldo, arguing that if Ronaldo displayed similar passion, there would not be such an uproar. Tacha asserted that Osimhen's passion is precisely what makes him one of the world's best attackers.
While Nigeria is flying on the pitch, growing in confidence and cohesion with each game, this episode highlights the Super Eagles' knack for generating unwanted distractions. The team now prepares for a quarter-final clash against either DR Congo or Algeria, facing an unsettling crisis off the pitch, with their star striker reportedly threatening to abandon the national team.
