AFCON 2025 Showdown: Super Eagles Prepare to Clash with Confident Mozambique
)
As the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 knockout stage approaches, all eyes are on the highly anticipated Round of 16 clash between Nigeria's Super Eagles and Mozambique's Mambas. Nigeria enters this fixture in formidable form, having secured a perfect run through the group stage and amassed a tournament-high eight goals, cementing their status as strong favorites against Mozambique.
Former Nigeria national team forward Peter Ijeh has confidently backed the Super Eagles to advance to the quarterfinals. Speaking to Footy Africa, Ijeh acknowledged Mozambique's impressive progress in the tournament but asserted that Nigeria's superior quality and extensive experience would ultimately be the decisive factors. He anticipates a competitive contest where "Nigeria’s far superior firepower will eventually tell." Historical records further support this prediction, with the Super Eagles having won four of their five previous encounters with Mozambique, with the only stalemate being a goalless draw in a 2009 World Cup qualifier.
Adding to the strategic discussions, AFCON 2013 winner Brown Ideye offered crucial advice to the Super Eagles on the Home Turf Podcast. Drawing from his own championship experience under Stephen Keshi in 2013, Ideye stressed the importance of abandoning conservative play in the knockout phase. He urged the team to maintain a high level of intensity from the first minute to the final whistle, emphasizing a "go for the kill" mentality. "Hit the ground running and bang those goals. More than one goal; if you can score five, do it,” Ideye stated, highlighting the necessity of an aggressive scoring approach.
Ideye also weighed in on team selection, advising Nigeria's coach, Eric Chelle, against making changes to the starting lineup. Instead, he recommended focusing on optimizing substitutions, ensuring the "right players" are introduced "at the right time" to allow the team to "blend in perfectly to get the perfect results.” The Super Eagles, under Chelle's guidance, will be looking to surpass their performance in the 2023 edition (played in 2024), where they reached the final before ultimately losing to Ivory Coast.
On the opposing side, Mozambique manager Chiquinho Conde remains resolute and confident in his team's ability to cause an upset. Despite navigating a challenging group stage, Conde believes the Mambas have "shown that we have a strong and competent team." He noted that while they "failed on the details" against formidable opponents like Côte d'Ivoire and Cameroon, the knockout stage is "do-or-die." Conde, while acknowledging Nigeria as favorites, called for his team to approach the game with "humility, tranquillity, and a lot of responsibility." Mozambique's journey to the Round of 16 included a landmark victory over Gabon, marking their first-ever win in the history of the Africa Cup of Nations, a testament to their growth and determination.
The high-stakes clash, which pits Nigeria's quest to extend their perfect tournament record against Mozambique's ambition for a historic upset, is scheduled for Monday, January 5, at the Fes Stadium.
