Ademola Lookman Unpacks Atletico's Triumph Over Tottenham Hotspur

Super Eagles and Atletico Madrid forward Ademola Lookman recently shared insights into the strong mentality that allowed his team to maintain composure against Tottenham Hotspur at the London Stadium. Despite a significant 5-2 victory in the first leg at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano, securing a comfortable advantage, the second leg presented a challenge when Tottenham's Randal Kolo Muani scored the game's first goal in the 30th minute. This goal ignited hopes of a comeback for Igor Tudor's side and stirred the crowd at the London Stadium.
Facing the pressure of a home goal and a surging crowd, Lookman, a 28-year-old ex-Atalanta player, emphasized that the squad's collective mentality was crucial in preventing them from collapsing. His own contribution was significant, as he set up Julian Alvarez at the beginning of the second half, which further solidified Atletico's position. Although more goals followed in the match, Atletico ultimately remained safe from trouble, securing their place in the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League.
Reflecting on their progression, Lookman expressed his satisfaction in a post-match interview with UEFA, stating, “We're very happy to be in the next round. Every game is hard. Everyone knows this competition and the quality of the teams.” He also highlighted the team's performance in the initial leg, noting, “In the last leg, we played very well, we scored five goals, and it took us through. Positives to take from the game and into the next round.”
Lookman further elaborated on the team's resilience: “Obviously, they scored a goal, and it's easy to collapse, but the boys that we have and the mentality that we have to stay in the game, so we did.” Looking ahead, Atletico Madrid is set to face Barcelona in what promises to be a "special game against another tough opponent." Lookman stressed the need for thorough preparation, adding, “We need to be ready; we'll prepare for that. Next game is for the weekend, and we'll take it game by game.”
Beyond their Champions League aspirations, Atletico Madrid also has an important domestic fixture, as they are scheduled to play against Real Madrid on Sunday. This match will be vital as they aim to secure a UEFA Champions League spot for the upcoming season.
