ADC Convention Rages On Amidst Chaos, David Mark Issues Fiery Call for Democracy

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) successfully convened its 2026 National Elective Convention in Abuja, a gathering that its National Chairman, David Mark, described as a defining moment in Nigeria’s democratic history. During the convention, Mark issued a stern warning against escalating attempts to stifle opposition voices, emphasizing that Nigeria’s democracy must be protected at all costs. He welcomed attendees not just to a convention, but to a moment that would be remembered by history, challenging where individuals stood when the ADC rose against efforts to silence the voice of the people. Mark proudly declared that thousands of Nigerians gathered in Abuja to unequivocally state that democracy would not perish under their watch.

Mark underscored the convention’s significance, particularly as the first under his leadership, representing the unyielding survival of opposition democracy in Nigeria. He reiterated that the ADC was founded on service-driven politics, not personal ambition, pledging to reposition the party as a formidable vehicle for national transformation. Mark stated his acceptance of responsibility with humility, a clear sense of duty, and an unshakable commitment to make the ADC a platform to rescue and rebuild Nigeria.

However, the convention was marred by allegations from Mark of concerted efforts by unnamed forces to frustrate the party. He accused these forces of interference through the courts, institutions, and bureaucratic obstructions, specifically targeting the convention. Mark asserted that they attempted to stop the convention, removed the party’s names from official portals, denied preferred venues, and deployed every instrument to prevent the gathering. Despite these obstacles, he insisted that such actions had inadvertently strengthened the party’s resolve, welding its members together and deepening their commitment.

The ADC chairman warned that the shrinking democratic space in the country posed a grave threat, stating unequivocally that the party would not yield. He declared that surrendering would mean yielding ground to tyranny and becoming complicit in the destruction of Nigeria’s democracy, highlighting that the stakes extended beyond the ADC to the very survival of democracy itself. Mark further positioned the ADC as a credible alternative for Nigerians, particularly the younger generation seeking change, noting a growing awareness for a different country where the ADC is emerging as a viable option.

Mark also extended a call to all opposition leaders across the political spectrum to unite in a patriotic endeavor to save the country. He clarified that the party’s mission transcended a mere quest for power, emphasizing its commitment to demonstrating that democracy can deliver a better life for citizens. He pledged the party’s prioritization of accountability and service, asserting that the constitution and the party would be supreme, with no member, regardless of their standing, being above the rules. Mark assured Nigerians that if given the mandate, the ADC would focus on people-centered governance, deploying Nigeria’s resources for the benefit of the majority.

Despite the grand declarations, the convention faced substantial logistical hurdles. The ADC proceeded with the event at the Rainbow Event Centre after being denied access to the initially planned Eagle Square and Moshood Abiola National Stadium. Bolaji Abdullahi, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, alleged that the management of the Rainbow Event Centre was also under pressure to cancel the booking. On the day of the convention, former Kogi senator, Dino Melaye, expressed frustration over the situation, including the failure of the air conditioning systems, which left delegates contending with heat. Melaye adamantly stated, “We are using this place by force,” and insisted that the convention would proceed even if it meant holding it in a motor park. Efforts were reportedly made to bring in fans to provide relief as proceedings continued. The party maintained its resolve, affirming that the convention would proceed as scheduled despite all disruptions and difficulties.

Expressing optimism about the party’s future, Mark concluded by stating his belief that if the ADC remained disciplined, united, and committed to its principles, it would play a defining role in shaping the future of Nigeria. He then formally declared the eighth national convention of the African Democratic Congress open.
