Daredevil Star Unveils Kingpin's 'Devastatingly Bad' Future!

Daredevil: Born Again Season 2, Episode 5, titled "The Grand Design," delivered a significant emotional blow to audiences with the shocking death of Vanessa Fisk, a pivotal character portrayed by Ayelet Zurer. Zurer recently discussed the impact of Vanessa's demise on her husband, Wilson Fisk (Vincent D'Onofrio), and the future trajectory of the season.
The events leading to Vanessa's death unfolded dramatically at Fogwell's Gym. In Episode 4, "Gloves Off," Wilson Fisk orchestrated a public boxing match, intending to trap Bullseye (Wilson Bethel). However, his meticulously laid plans went awry when Vanessa, against Fisk's express wishes, arrived at the match. The subsequent confrontation between Bullseye and the Fisks culminated in Vanessa sustaining a fatal blow, dying later in the hospital after briefly regaining consciousness.
Vanessa had always served as a crucial balancing force for Fisk, embodying both a Lady Macbeth-like influence and a tempering presence during his most chaotic moments. She was consistently depicted as the one person Fisk genuinely loved, supporting him through their marriage's challenges. Her death is poised to have devastating consequences for Kingpin, with Zurer emphasizing that emotionally, Fisk was Vanessa's "skin" and she was his "heart," leading to an imbalance that will plunge things into a grim state for him.
Ayelet Zurer revealed that she received calls from Dario Scardapane and Sana Amanat, who were protective in explaining the necessity of Vanessa's death for the narrative. Zurer, along with Vincent D'Onofrio, mourned the character's loss and even attempted to persuade the showrunners to reverse the decision. However, the showrunners were resolute, believing Vanessa's death was essential to make Season 2 "explosive" and provide the necessary "ammunition" for the storyline.
Delving into Vanessa's motivations, Zurer explained that her character's decision to attend the fight, despite Fisk's warnings, stemmed from her deep-seated loyalty and desire for truth—themes that have defined their relationship since Season 1. Vanessa, feeling increasingly "haunted," believed she needed to be present to protect Fisk, even from himself. Zurer suggested that Vanessa, subconsciously, took the bullet for Fisk, seeing herself as a protector in their intricate and codependent relationship.
Filming the final scenes, particularly those in the hospital, was an intensely emotional experience for Zurer and D'Onofrio. Zurer described the process as sad, marking the end of over a decade of working together and a smooth professional friendship. Despite the pain of saying goodbye, she expressed appreciation for how Vanessa's arc concluded, particularly highlighting the "beautiful scene" where Vanessa asks Fisk to "Tell me that story."
On a lighter note, Zurer shared what she would not miss about playing Vanessa: the exceptionally high heels, which she found challenging to wear given her personal preference for comfortable footwear. Conversely, she expressed what she would miss: her long wardrobe chats with Emily Gunshor, the camaraderie with Vincent D'Onofrio and the entire cast and crew, including Charlie Cox, Wilson Bethel, Margarita Levieva, and DP Hillary Fyfe Spera, as well as the experience of filming in New York. She acknowledged the essential role of Vanessa's distinctive look, including her dresses and color theory, in defining the character.
Reflecting on her biggest takeaway from playing Vanessa for many years, Zurer noted the profound codependency in Vanessa and Fisk's relationship. This experience led her to question the ability to maintain singularity and independence within such a deep bond, relating it to her own introspections. Zurer underscored the show's strength in grounding its characters in "real humanity," making their complex dynamics relatable.
