ADC Alliance Unites for Zonal Security, Backs Atiku's Bold Fuel Subsidy Reversal

Governorship candidates of the African Democratic Convention (ADC) in the seven North Western states have collectively signed "Compact 2027–2031," a regional covenant designed to address security, foster development, and ensure shared prosperity if they are elected in the upcoming gubernatorial elections. This significant event, organized by the North West Governorship Strategy Group, took place at the Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja on Wednesday, marking the official commencement of the 2027 governorship campaigns in accordance with the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) timetable, which designated September 9, 2026, as the start date for Governorship and State Houses of Assembly campaigns. The candidates who endorsed this compact include Abubakar Malami, SAN for Kebbi; Manir Mohammad Daniya for Sokoto; Sabo Mohammed Nakudu for Jigawa; Shinkafi Bilyaminu Yusuf for Zamfara; Senator Ahmad Babba Kaita (represented by his deputy, Aminu Yar’adua Ahmed) for Katsina State; Isa Mohammed Ashru (represented by his deputy, Kantiok Irmiya Ishaku) for Kaduna; and Ibrahim Ali Amin (represented by Deputy Sabo Mohammed Nakudu) for Kano.

Speaking on behalf of the candidates, Abubakar Malami, former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice and ADC's flag-bearer for Kebbi state, highlighted the dire conditions prevalent in the North West. Malami revealed that the region has been severely affected by insecurity, leading to the loss of over 16,000 lives between June 2023 and August 2026. Furthermore, more than 1,583 kidnapping incidents since January 2023 have resulted in over 10,000 people being displaced from their homes and farms. The crisis has also led to the abandonment of over 533,000 hectares of farmland in Zamfara and Katsina alone, exacerbating food insecurity across the region.

Malami further emphasized the social ramifications of this insecurity, noting that the North West accounts for a staggering 45 percent of Nigeria’s out-of-school children. He explained that the emptying of farms due to insecurity has led to widespread hunger, driven children out of classrooms, and denied them the essential education needed to reduce the recruitment pool for future banditry, kidnappings, and associated crimes. The candidates, he affirmed, are committed to reorienting governance to effectively break this vicious cycle of crisis and restore peace, security, and normalcy to the region.

The former Attorney General also drew attention to the significant financial allocations the states and local government areas in the North West received, totaling over N8.33 trillion in federal allocations between June 2023 and August 2026. Despite these substantial funds, he lamented that the revenues have not translated into tangible improvements in basic services such as accessible transport, affordable food and healthcare, functioning schools, or improved living conditions for the populace. Malami asserted that if elected, the North West ADC governorship candidates would individually and collectively implement deliberate measures to reverse this reality, ensuring that public resources deliver measurable improvements in citizens' lives.
