Abuja-Kaduna Rail Shocker: Probe Launched as Train Operations Resume Post-Incident
The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) and the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) have provided detailed accounts and initiated an investigation into a train incident that occurred on the Abuja–Kaduna corridor near Asham on Monday, March 16, 2026. While initial reports sparked concerns, the NRC clarified that the event was a minor operational fault stemming from a coupling issue, not a derailment, with services fully restored shortly after.
According to the NRC's official statement and preliminary technical findings, the KA-2 service departed Rigasa Railway Station at 7:15 a.m. and maintained a smooth run until approximately 9:16 a.m. On approach to Asham (KM 50–51), a loud bang was heard following contact between a power car, a trailing locomotive, and a passenger coach. Preliminary findings from the NRC pointed to a defect in one or more couplers, leading to a temporary disconnection within the train formation. Crucially, the corporation stressed that all coaches remained firmly on track, enabling the train to continue its journey after safety checks. The NRC explicitly dismissed suggestions of a derailment, explaining that such a scenario would involve train wheels leaving the track, making further movement impossible. The train ultimately proceeded safely to Idu Railway Station, where all passengers disembarked without further incident.
A total of 481 persons were onboard the KA-2 service, including 429 passengers, crew members, security personnel, and other support staff. The NRC reported that 26 individuals sustained varying degrees of injury. All affected persons received prompt medical attention at nearby medical facilities, with no life-threatening cases reported. Emergency response protocols were immediately activated, with technical teams deployed to the scene. To ensure continued safe movement, the affected rolling stock, including the trailing locomotive, power car, and a passenger coach, was isolated from the train. Despite the disruption, the service departed the incident point at about 9:42 a.m., made a brief stop at Kubwa, and arrived at Idu Station at approximately 10:39 a.m., recording a delay of 38 minutes, attributed to the time required to safely isolate components and secure the train.
Concurrently, the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) commenced an investigation into what it described as a “serious operational occurrence.” The NSIB's preliminary information detailed that the KA2 service, comprising two locomotives (front and rear), a power car, two business class coaches, and six standard passenger coaches, experienced a mechanical fault. The bureau noted that a rear locomotive detached from the moving train and rolled forward on a downward gradient, making contact with the rear section of the train. The NSIB confirmed that 429 passengers, 46 crew members, and 24 security personnel were onboard, and while no fatalities occurred, several passengers sustained injuries and received first aid.
The Director-General of the NSIB, Alex Badeh Jr., stated that the investigation would be comprehensive, focusing on multiple factors to determine the root cause. This probe will examine the integrity of the locomotive attachment systems, with particular attention to a possible coupling failure that may have led to the detachment. Investigators will also review operational procedures, including train configuration and data recorded during the descent toward Asham. The condition of the track and other relevant infrastructure within the affected corridor will also form a critical part of the investigation. The NSIB anticipates that findings from this probe will guide safety recommendations aimed at preventing a recurrence and strengthening operational standards across the rail sector.
Normal operations were fully restored the same day, with subsequent services running without incident. The return AK1 service departed Idu at 2:48 p.m. and arrived in Kaduna at 5:33 p.m., with NRC Managing Director Kayode Opeifa onboard to oversee the recovery process. Later that evening, another service (KA-4) departed Rigasa at 6:12 p.m., arriving at Kubwa at 8:31 p.m. and Idu at 8:58 p.m., further confirming the full restoration of normal operations. Opeifa commended the swift intervention by NRC personnel, stating, “Train services are back to normal, safer and better,” and confirmed that additional safety and operational measures had been introduced to prevent a recurrence. The NRC urged the media and the public to rely on verified information, reaffirming its commitment to strengthening monitoring, maintenance, and operational systems to ensure passenger confidence in the Abuja–Kaduna Train Service.
