2027 Elections Tensions Escalate as Campaign Posters of Obi and Kwankwaso Burned in Kano

Kano State witnessed rising political tension on Monday after a mob in Ungogo Local Government Area reportedly burned campaign posters featuring Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso, the presidential and vice-presidential candidates of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).

A viral video circulating on social media showed youths chanting while destroying posters bearing the images of the two politicians. The incident has intensified concerns over growing political unrest ahead of the 2027 elections.

During the chaos, the NDC chairman for Ungogo LGA, Bilyaminu Bachirawa, was reportedly dragged from a moving motorcycle and narrowly escaped being lynched by the angry crowd. Eyewitness accounts suggest he was pursued and physically targeted before managing to escape, although the exact trigger of the confrontation remains unclear. Security conditions in the area were described as tense following the incident.

The development came just 48 hours after the NDC formally announced Peter Obi as its presidential candidate for the 2027 general election, with Rabiu Kwankwaso unveiled as his running mate shortly after.

Both figures recently defected from the African Democratic Congress (ADC), citing internal disputes and legal disagreements within their former party. As of the time of reporting, neither the Kano State Police Command nor the NDC had issued an official response, while no casualties were confirmed.
