2027 Election Battle: INEC Unleashes Candidate Credentials, Tinubu's Omissions Spark Debate

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially commenced the public display of the personal particulars and credentials of presidential and National Assembly candidates for the upcoming 2027 general elections. This critical exercise, a statutory requirement under Section 29(3) of the Electoral Act, 2026, aims to foster transparency, accountability, and public confidence by allowing citizens, political parties, civil society organizations, and the media to meticulously scrutinize the documents submitted by aspirants. The publication, which began on Saturday, is being conducted at INEC's state headquarters across the country, including Abuja, and extends to the commission's six Area Council offices, ensuring wide accessibility.

Among the prominent candidates whose details have been published are President Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC), former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, the flag-bearer of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), and Peter Obi, the presidential candidate for the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC). Their respective running mates, including Vice President Kashim Shettima for the APC and Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso for the NDC, also had their particulars displayed. These documents encompass academic certificates, declarations, and other supporting credentials submitted to endorse their nominations for the presidential election.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) swiftly responded to INEC's action, hailing it as a definitive end to the misinformation and propaganda that had plagued the party. According to a statement issued on Sunday by its National Publicity Secretary, Honourable Jungudo Haruna Mohammed, the publication of candidates' names has laid to rest doubts suggesting the PDP would neither field candidates nor be recognized by INEC. Of particular significance, the party confirmed Senator Professor Sandy Ojang Onor as its presidential candidate and Alhaji Babangida Umar as his running mate, who are set to represent the party in the 2027 presidential election. The PDP, under the leadership of National Chairman Honourable Abdulrahman Mohammed and National Secretary Senator Samuel Anyanwu, reiterated its commitment to genuine reconciliation, inclusiveness, and internal cohesion, extending an open hand to aggrieved members and welcoming returning and new members to build a stronger, more formidable platform for Nigerians. However, the Interim National Working Committee (INWC) of the PDP, led by Dr. Tanimu Turaki, indicated it was not deterred by INEC's decision and awaited “favourable judicial pronouncements,” with its National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Ini Ememobong, asserting that their cases in court would continue.

A detailed review of President Bola Tinubu's Form EC9 nomination document reveals that he listed a Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Business Administration, obtained with “honours” from Chicago State University in the United States in 1979, as his sole university qualification. While the spaces for primary and secondary school qualifications on the summary page of the form were marked “0000” years of attendance or left blank, copies of his B.Sc. degree certificate and National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) certificate were attached as supporting documents. His NYSC service was recorded in Oyo State from December 1982 to November 1983. Tinubu's personal details identify his date of birth as March 29, 1952, with Lagos as his place of birth and “politician” as his occupation. His employment history includes working at Mobil Nigeria Limited from 1983 to 1992, serving as Governor of Lagos State from 1999 to 2007, and his current role with the Federal Government of Nigeria since 2023.

Similarly, the credentials submitted by Vice President Kashim Shettima provided a comprehensive overview of his educational background. He attended Lamisula I Primary School between 1972 and 1978, obtaining a Certificate of Primary Education from the Ministry of Education, North-Eastern State, and graduated second in his class, excelling in English, History, and Religious Knowledge. His West African Examinations Council (WAEC) result from Government Secondary School, Potiskum, in June 1983, included six credits and passes, notably a distinction in Religious Knowledge and Economics. He further earned a Second Class Upper Division degree in Agriculture from the University of Maiduguri in August 1989, followed by a Master of Science in Agricultural Economics from the University of Ibadan. Shettima completed his national service under the NYSC between October 1989 and October 1990.

The publication of these documents by INEC marks the beginning of a statutory period for public scrutiny, as stipulated by the Electoral Act. Section 33 of the Act empowers any person who believes that information contained in a candidate's affidavit or supporting documents is false to institute an action in court with supporting evidence. Campaigns for the presidential election are slated to commence on August 19, leading up to the presidential and National Assembly elections scheduled for January 16, 2027.
