Zimbabwean Official Jailed: Mutare Supervisor Guilty in $16k Workplace Fraud
A Mutare woman, Michellene Muzenda, has been sentenced to an effective two years in prison for defrauding her employer of over US$16,000. As a supervisor, she falsified cash sales records over four months, a scheme uncovered during a reconciliation exercise. Investigations led to the recovery of some funds and goods bought with the stolen money.A 25-year-old woman named Michellene Muzenda from Mutare has been handed an effective two-year prison sentence after being found guilty of defrauding her employer of US$16,241.05. The fraud occurred over a four-month period, between November 5, 2025, and March 17, 2026, during which Muzenda, who held a supervisory position, systematically falsified daily cash sales records.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ), Muzenda manipulated cash book entries, deliberately recording figures that did not align with the actual sales reflected in the company's automated teller machine (ATM) records. This misrepresentation directly led to the significant financial prejudice suffered by her employer, amounting to the aforementioned US$16,241.05.
The fraudulent activities came to light on March 17 when the employer initiated an exercise requiring supervisors to reconcile daily cash sales recorded in the cash book against the corresponding ATM records. This reconciliation process immediately exposed discrepancies, prompting further in-depth investigations. A forensic audit was subsequently conducted, focusing on cash variances at both the company's central business district and Branch B outlets.
Investigations conclusively established that Muzenda had falsified the sales records specifically to conceal the missing funds. During the course of these inquiries, police successfully recovered US$700 in cash. Furthermore, subsequent investigations led to the recovery of various goods from Muzenda's shop, located at Tinmark Mall in Mutare. These goods were allegedly purchased using the illicit proceeds derived from the fraud.
Initially, Muzenda received a six-year prison sentence. However, two years of this sentence were suspended for a period of five years on certain conditions. An additional two years were suspended on the condition that she restitutes her employer for the defrauded amount. These suspensions ultimately resulted in an effective and immediate prison term of two years for Michellene Muzenda.
