Zimbabwe Faces Crisis: President Demands Urgent Action After Deadly Road Carnage Claims 24 Lives

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has issued a strong directive to all government departments and agencies responsible for road safety in Zimbabwe, urging them to urgently coordinate their efforts to curb the alarming rise in road fatalities. This presidential order follows a particularly grim period that saw three major accidents in just five days, claiming the lives of 24 people across the country.
Highlighting the severity of the situation, President Mnangagwa described the recent spate of crashes, including a devastating head-on collision between a bus and a haulage truck on the Gokwe-Kwekwe Road that resulted in 10 deaths, as leaving a "bloody trail." He emphasized that this grave turn of mishaps demands a collective awakening of conscience and immediate, coordinated action from all involved government entities to halt the escalating carnage on the nation's roads.
As part of his comprehensive directive, President Mnangagwa instructed authorities to accelerate the re-establishment of road maintenance units across Zimbabwe. He also called for the immediate allocation of adequate resources to facilitate impactful remedial work on the country's weather-damaged highways and roads, acknowledging the critical role of infrastructure in road safety. This move aims to address the deteriorating road conditions that contribute significantly to accidents.
Furthermore, the President called for drastic interventions specifically targeting reckless driving and the presence of unroadworthy vehicles on the roads. He stressed that lasting solutions are needed to tackle irresponsible behaviour by drivers and to remove dangerous vehicles from circulation, which are identified as major contributors to the high incidence of fatal road traffic accidents in Zimbabwe. This multifaceted approach underscores the government's commitment to improving road safety standards.
Zimbabwe has experienced a concerning surge in fatal road traffic accidents in recent years. Investigations into these incidents consistently point to several major causes, including poor road infrastructure, prevalent speeding, human error on the part of drivers, and the continued operation of unroadworthy public transport vehicles. Addressing these systemic issues through robust policy implementation and enforcement is crucial to reversing the tragic trend of increasing road carnage.
