Kyiv Under Siege: Russia Unleashes Drone Attacks, Dozens Wounded Across Ukraine

Russia has escalated its attacks on Ukrainian cities, conducting a series of increasingly frequent daytime assaults on Thursday that resulted in fatalities and multiple injuries. These intensified strikes come more than four years into Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, demonstrating a concerning shift in the nature and timing of the aggression.

One of the most devastating incidents occurred in Kharkiv, where a Russian drone attack on a shopping centre tragically killed one person and wounded several others. Local prosecutors confirmed the fatality, and regional governor Oleg Synegoubov shared graphic images on Telegram depicting the charred remains of a department store, with significant structural damage including a torn-away roof and wall section.

Further strikes were reported across the country. In the southern city of Kherson, three individuals sustained injuries during an attack on a local bus. Simultaneously, three more people were injured in Odesa, another southern city. Yaroslav Shanko, head of the Kherson city administration, condemned these actions, stating that "The enemy has been attacking civilian transportation in broad daylight while people were simply going about their business."

The capital, Kyiv, was not spared, with journalists reporting multiple explosions and air raid alerts sounding repeatedly throughout Thursday morning. During these alerts, numerous people were observed stranded in the metro system, which temporarily halts services across the Dnipro River. Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed that four people were injured in Kyiv, with two requiring hospitalisation. He also specified that a drone had crashed onto a road, and social media footage revealed enormous plumes of smoke rising from targeted sites. The head of the Kyiv region, Tymur Tkachenko, added that the region had been under attack "all night with strike drones and ballistic missiles," with warehouses among the primary targets.

In the northeastern Sumy region, authorities reported another fatality and four injuries resulting from Russian attacks. These combined daytime and regular overnight assaults underscore a brutal pattern of targeting civilian areas and infrastructure.

In response to these relentless attacks, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reiterated his urgent appeal to Kyiv's allies. He called for the immediate dispatch of more ballistic missile defence packages, emphasising their critical role in countering Russia's intensified aerial bombardments and protecting Ukrainian lives and cities.
