Our initial ride in a heavily disguised prototype of the 2028 Bentley Torcal EV has unveiled a groundbreaking vehicle, poised to be Bentley’s first all-electric SUV. This highly anticipated model combines a luxurious cabin with Porsche-related hardware, Bentley-specific tuning, and a distinctive, amusing soundtrack derived from real drums, described as the most convincing fake powertrain sounds heard yet.
The 2028 Torcal is built on the corporate Volkswagen Group platform, sharing its underlying architecture with the Porsche Cayenne Electric. This connection means the Torcal will feature similar length and much of the same hardware, including a powerful 113-kWh battery and advanced 800-volt electrical architecture. While Bentley has been cautious with specifics, initial details suggest a dual-motor powertrain capable of delivering more than 838 horsepower (850 ps) and 738 lb-ft of torque (1,000 nm), potentially making it the most powerful Bentley ever produced.
Regarding its range, the Torcal is targeting approximately 600 kilometers (373 miles) on the European WLTP scale. For fast-charging, Bentley claims the ability to go from 10 to 80 percent charge in less than 20 minutes, or gain 100 miles of range in just 7 minutes, provided a 400-kW charger is available. The vehicle is expected to weigh around 6,000 pounds and will utilize the Cayenne Electric’s active suspension, albeit with a unique Bentley-specific calibration. The brand’s objective is to imbue the Torcal with the comfort of a Flying Spur and the dynamic capability of a Continental GT. Additionally, Bentley representatives hinted at 'compelling' and 'unexpected' off-road capabilities.
During a 45-minute ride in northern California, which included time in both the front and back seats of the camouflaged prototype, a Bentley engineer partially revealed the interior. While photography was prohibited, the glimpse suggested Bentley’s signature opulence. A standout feature is undoubtedly the unique powertrain sound system. Unlike conventional EV soundscapes, the Torcal's sounds are ingeniously crafted from real drums, offering a sophisticated and engaging auditory experience that complements its high-performance luxury.
