Zambian President Hichilema Under Fire: Second Term Prospects Ignites Fierce Political Battle

Ahead of the August general election, Zambian political discourse is sharply divided, presenting citizens with a pivotal choice regarding the nation's future trajectory. President Hichilema, in a recent Facebook post, framed the election as a clear dichotomy: a Zambia moving forward versus the challenging landscape the UPND inherited in 2021, asserting significant progress over the last five years. This view, however, is not without its critics, as Mukanga reacted by urging Zambians to reconsider voting for the UPND, cautioning citizens against being misled again.

Reinforcing the ruling alliance's position, NEW Nation Party president and UPND Alliance partner, Nevers Mumba, emphasized the alliance's strong record. He highlighted that the government inherited an economy severely damaged by debt obligations, a weakening currency, declining foreign reserves, and high inflation. Pastor Mumba detailed the arduous process of economic reconstruction, stating that the government, under President Hakainde Hichilema, has worked diligently to rebuild the economy "brick by brick and step by step." He further pointed to Zambia's improved standing on the international stage, making it a more attractive destination for investment and business, a compelling story he believes the alliance must effectively communicate to the Zambian people.

Mumba contrasted the UPND Alliance's campaign, which is anchored on tangible achievements, with the opposition's approach. He argued that opposition parties often find campaigning easier as they can make promises without having to account for a governing record, with some promises potentially aimed solely at winning votes rather than reflecting a commitment to implementation. Despite not contesting any position himself, Mumba reiterated his unwavering commitment to Zambia's development, stemming from a lifelong vision for the nation's salvation, irrespective of holding public office.

Crucially, Pastor Mumba also called upon members of the UPND Alliance to uphold democratic principles during the campaign period, advocating against violence or obstructing opponents from freely campaigning. He stressed that the alliance has a strong record to present and should focus on reminding citizens of the country's economic challenges prior to 2021 while showcasing its governance achievements.

Adding weight to the call for continuity, Mr. Mwamba, as he concluded his active political career, cautioned citizens against politicians lacking credible economic and developmental plans. He underscored the visible progress under the UPND administration across various sectors, asserting that the "New Dawn Government" has laid a solid foundation for economic transformation, infrastructure development, improved social services, and enhanced investor confidence. Mwamba argued that continuity is essential for Zambia to fully realize the benefits of ongoing reforms.

He strongly urged voters to avoid repeating past mistakes by rejecting governance styles that Zambians discarded in 2021, highlighting President Hichilema's leadership as one characterized by a more focused approach to economic management and national development. Mwamba advised citizens to trust in the leadership they have already tested, emphasizing President Hichilema's proven capability, practical results, and clear vision for Zambia's future. He warned against treating national leadership as an experiment, advocating for entrusting the country's future to leaders with a proven track record of performance, integrity, and dedication to improving citizens' lives. In his parting message, Mr. Mwamba championed unity, vigilance, and continued support for national development, affirming President Hakainde Hichilema as the optimal candidate to steer Zambia towards greater prosperity and economic growth.
