Zambia's Political Divide Deepens as Mumbi Phiri's Tribal Remarks Spark Outrage and Investigations

A contentious debate concerning tribalism and the bedrock of national unity has recently seized the political discourse in Zambia. This controversy has been fueled by statements from various figures, igniting strong reactions and highlighting deep-seated ideological divides within the country’s political landscape regarding what constitutes unity versus division.
Anderson Banda, the Youth Chairperson for the UPND in Lusaka Province, forcefully denounced statements attributed to Ms. Phiri, branding them as “a seed for division and anarchy.” During a press briefing at the UPND Secretariat, Mr. Banda voiced his profound disappointment that opposition leaders appeared to be exploiting tribalism as a political instrument. He issued a stern warning that exposing the nation’s youth to “hate speech, tribal sentimentalism and divisive statements can lead to irreparable damage to national unity,” emphasizing the potential long-term harm to Zambia’s cohesion.
Mr. Banda underscored President Hakainde Hichilema’s deliberate and persistent endeavors to solidify the “One Zambia, One Nation” mantra. He cited the President’s participation in various traditional ceremonies across all Zambian regions as concrete evidence of his commitment to national solidarity, thereby asserting that such divisive rhetoric is unacceptable within the political arena. Furthermore, Banda advocated for the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) to amend the Electoral Code of Conduct. He proposed incorporating a specific clause that would sanction politicians who leverage tribalism to further their political agendas, aiming to legally deter such practices.
In Banda’s view, the Zambian populace is not swayed by “tribal hegemony and divisive language.” Instead, he maintained that citizens are primarily concerned with securing “meaningful development that will lift them out of poverty.” He specifically admonished Ms. Phiri to cease promoting tribal sentiments, reiterating that Zambians elected President Hichilema based on his compelling economic vision and leadership, which he claims has already delivered significant progress, rather than his tribal background or regional origin.
However, the UPND’s stance has met with sharp opposition. Mwamba, representing a counter-perspective, swiftly criticized the UPND for its reaction to Hon. Mumbi’s remarks, labeling it a “naked mark of opportunism and hypocrisy.” Mwamba directly challenged the narrative of unity promoted by the UPND, asserting that “President Hakainde Hichilema is the most divisive leader Zambia has ever had due [to] his tribal and regional appointments.” This strong counter-accusation illuminates a significant ideological chasm regarding the nature of leadership and its impact on national unity in Zambia, intensifying the ongoing political debate.
