Zambia's PF Party Rises Anew: Makebi Zulu Shakes Up Leadership, Lifts Suspensions!

President Makebi Zulu has initiated significant restructuring within the Patriotic Front (PF) party, making several key appointments to the Central Committee and implementing reforms aimed at internal unity and organizational efficiency. Prominent author, playwright, and social activist Mulenga Kapwepwe has been named a Member of the Central Committee. Additionally, former Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU) National Coordinator Chanda Kabwe has been appointed as Chairperson for National Mobilisation. Other new members include former Permanent Secretary David Shamulenge, Miss Nachilima Chisala, and Mrs. Kangwa Puta.
In a strategic move to streamline candidate selection, President Zulu has tasked Mr. Chanda Kabwe with coordinating Provincial Chairpersons to finalize applications from individuals seeking to contest as Members of Parliament, Mayors, Council Chairpersons, and Councillors. These applications will then be submitted for final approval by the Central Committee. This assignment places Kabwe in a critical organizational role, aimed at strengthening party structures and ensuring a coordinated approach to future elections.
Further addressing internal party dynamics, President Zulu has lifted all existing suspensions and issued a moratorium on expulsions with immediate effect. This decision signals a clear intent to foster reconciliation and reduce internal blockages within the party. Zulu has encouraged party structures to uphold discipline even during challenging times and has advised all previously expelled members who are willing to reconcile to contact the Secretariat to process their return to the party. This initiative aims to bring party structures back into working order and project a message of internal reopening.
These recent appointments and reforms follow earlier steps taken by President Zulu. On Sunday, 29th March 2026, after his election as party president on Saturday, 21st March 2026, Zulu had already made initial appointments. This first group included Daniel Bukali, Isaac Nsoneka, Kenneth C. Moola, Dr. Alex Lwando, Rizwan Patel, and Max Kapantha, all appointed as members of the Central Committee. According to a statement issued by Patriotic Front Chairperson for Information and Publicity, Amb. Emmanuel Mwamba, these appointments are specifically intended to fill existing vacancies within the party's established structure. Mwamba clarified that this remains the same Central Committee headed by Hon. Zulu as president and Hon. Given Lubinda as Vice President of the Party, framing the changes as an activation of party machinery rather than confusion at the top.
However, these developments unfold amidst significant contestations for the PF leadership. The Lusaka High Court recently confirmed Miles Sampa as the legitimate president of the Patriotic Front, dismissing a legal challenge that sought to overturn his election. The ruling followed a petition filed by Brian Mundubile and seven others, who argued that an extraordinary general conference held on October 24, 2023, was unlawful. Judge Conceptor Chinyama found that the applicants failed to prove illegality in the process, thereby validating the conference outcome. The court further noted that Sampa was justified in convening the conference given the party's lack of a functioning central committee and a 'laissez-faire' posture in its internal operations. This judicial affirmation of Sampa's leadership introduces a complex layer to the ongoing internal reorganizations attributed to Makebi Zulu.
President Zulu is anticipated to convene the first National Executive Committee and Central Committee meetings soon to address these recent and critical developments. These meetings are expected to provide the next real measure of the momentum and direction of the party amidst its leadership challenges.
