Yobe Road Horror: Multiple Fatalities in Ghastly Auto Crash

Yobe State has recently witnessed multiple tragic road accidents, resulting in numerous fatalities and injuries, prompting renewed calls from authorities for heightened road safety awareness. These incidents underscore the critical need for motorists to adhere to traffic regulations and avoid dangerous driving practices.

One such devastating incident occurred on the Damaturu–Potiskum Road at Dogon Kuka village, involving a head-on collision between a Howo truck with registration number DAL 973 YY and another truck, identified as a Mitsubishi truck, marked NNR 437 XA. The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Yobe State Sector Commander, Andrew Longkam, confirmed that the accident, which took place at 12:40 pm, resulted in eight deaths and three injuries, with one passenger escaping unharmed. Preliminary investigations by the FRSC suggested that the driver of the Mitsubishi truck was speeding excessively and lost control, crashing into the oncoming vehicle. Longkam attributed the crash to "overspeeding and route violation," which he described as unsafe driving habits in the state. Following the incident, the FRSC rescue team evacuated the 11 victims to the Specialist Hospital, Damaturu, for treatment and the deposition of the deceased at the morgue. The FRSC, assisted by the Dogon Kuka Police Motor Traffic Division, swiftly cleared the obstructed Kano–Maiduguri Expressway to prevent further accidents and ensure a smooth flow of traffic.

Adding to the grim toll, seven people have died in a separate motor accident along the Damaturu-Damagum Road, specifically at Gaggaba village in Fune Local Government Area. The Yobe State Police Command spokesman, Dungus Abdulkarim, reported that this fatal accident occurred around 01:20 pm on Thursday, January 15, 2026. The collision involved a DAF trailer with Registration Number DAL 963 YY, driven by Malam Abubakar, and a Mitsubishi Canter with Registration Number XA 437 NNR, driven by Salisu Ibrahim. Investigations revealed that the Mitsubishi Canter, allegedly driven at excessive speed, veered off its lane and collided with the oncoming DAF trailer. Both drivers, along with three occupants of the trailer and two occupants of the Mitsubishi Canter, perished at the scene.

In response to these alarming incidents, authorities have intensified their warnings to the public. Commissioner of Police Emmanuel Ado, while sympathizing with the bereaved families, expressed significant concern over the escalating number of road traffic accidents, noting that such incidents claimed 120 lives across Yobe State in 2025. Both the FRSC and the Police Command reiterated their calls for motorists to strictly avoid route violations, excessive speeding, and disregard for traffic regulations. The FRSC sector commander emphasized the corps' ongoing commitment to ensuring safer roads through prompt emergency response and sustained public education campaigns aimed at curbing auto crashes in the state.
