Wirtz Ignites Debate: Liverpool's 'Giving Up' Against City Scrutinized by VVD
Liverpool midfielder Florian Wirtz has strongly refuted claims by captain Virgil van Dijk that the team gave up during their recent 4-0 FA Cup defeat against Manchester City. While acknowledging the mental difficulty of being 3-0 down in the 80th minute, Wirtz maintained that the players continued to create chances to try and turn the game around against Pep Guardiola's side. He emphasized that losing 4-0 to City does not meet Liverpool's standards.
This internal debate arises just four days before a critical Champions League quarterfinal first leg against last season's winners, Paris Saint-Germain, in Paris. The FA Cup humiliation at the Etihad Stadium saw many Liverpool supporters leave early due to the team's perceived abject performance under manager Arne Slot.
