'Wicked: For Good's Wild Awards Journey: Oscar Snub, BAFTA Drama & ACE Recognition

The American Cinema Editors (ACE) have announced the nominees for their 76th Annual ACE Eddie Awards, recognizing outstanding editing across film, television, documentaries, shorts, and digital content. The awards ceremony is scheduled for February 27 at UCLA’s Royce Hall, where winners will be unveiled. Special honors will also be presented, with Ang Lee receiving the ACE Golden Eddie Filmmaker of the Year Award, Kim Larson and YouTube the ACE Visionary Award, and film editors Arthur Forney, ACE, and Robert Leighton, ACE, the ACE Career Achievement Awards.
In the highly anticipated feature film categories, the nominees for Best Edited Feature Film (Drama, Theatrical) include “F1” (edited by Stephen Mirrione, ACE), “Hamnet” (Chloé Zhao, ACE, Affonso Gonçalves, ACE), “Sentimental Value” (Olivier Bugge Coutté), “Sinners” (Michael P. The animated feature film category sees “The Bad Guys 2” (Jesse Averna, ACE), “KPop Demon Hunters” (Nathan Schauf), and “Zootopia 2” (Jeremy Milton, ACE) vying for recognition. For documentary features, nominees include “Becoming Led Zeppelin” (Dan Gitlin), “It’s Never Over, Jeff Buckley” (Brian Kates, ACE, Stacy Goldate, ACE), “John Candy: I Like Me” (Shane Reid, Darrin Roberts), “Ladies & Gentlemen… 50 Years of SNL Music” (James Lester, Oz Rodríguez), and “The Perfect Neighbor” (Viridiana Lieberman). A tie in the Best Edited Feature Film (Non-Theatrical) category resulted in four nominees: “The Gorge” (Frederic Thoraval, ACE), “Mountainhead” (Bill Henry, ACE, Mark Davies), “The Thursday Murder Club” (Dan Zimmerman, ACE), and “A Winter’s Song” (Yvette M. Amirian, ACE).
Television categories also saw numerous nominations. Coates Award for Student Editing nominees are Luis Barragan, Evan Nowack, and Keaton Schallhorn.
Turning to the British Academy Film Awards (BAFTA) 2026 lineup, the nominations have presented a mix of expected outcomes, snubs, and surprises. Films like “One Battle After Another,” “Sinners,” “Hamnet,” and “Marty Supreme” performed largely as anticipated, dominating various lists. However, several eyebrow-raising developments emerged, particularly with the limited five slots in the Best Film race. Performance categories, uniquely offering six slots—one more than the Oscars—allowed some unexpected names to gain recognition. The BAFTA nominations also continued their tradition of celebrating British and Irish talent, sometimes not reciprocated by their American counterparts.
Significant snubs include “Wicked: For Good,” which, after being completely shut out of the Oscar nominations, received minimal attention from BAFTA in main categories, securing nods only for costume and hair and make-up, while Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande missed acting nominations, and the film was absent from best film, director, or screenplay lists. Similarly, Guillermo del Toro missed a directing nod for “Frankenstein” despite Jacob Elordi's supporting actor nomination and the film's strong presence in craft categories. “Frankenstein” also failed to appear in best film or adapted screenplay at BAFTA, contrasting with its Oscar presence in those races. Furthermore, foreign-language films, with the exception of “Sentimental Value,” largely missed out on broader recognition, with critically acclaimed films like “It was Just an Accident” and “Sirat” only making it into the Best Film Not in the English Language category, and Oscar nominee Wagner Moura not advancing past the first round of BAFTA voting for “The Secret Agent”.
On the surprise front, Paul Mescal, despite missing his second Oscar nomination for “Hamnet,” secured a BAFTA supporting actor nomination for his portrayal of William Shakespeare, marking his third BAFTA Film Awards nod in four years. Chase Infiniti, a breakout star from “One Battle After Another,” earned a BAFTA leading actress nomination and a Rising Star Award nod, after being overlooked by the Oscars. Odessa A’zion from “Marty Supreme” also received her first BAFTA recognition with a supporting actress nomination for her role as Rachel, Timothée Chalamet’s co-star. The British indie hit “I Swear” surprisingly garnered five nominations, including two in performance categories: Robert Aramayo for leading actor (who also received a Rising Star nomination) and Peter Mullan for supporting actor. Finally, David Jonsson maintained composure while co-hosting the BAFTA nominations announcement as his film “Wasteman,” which he starred in and produced, received a nod for outstanding debut by a British writer, director, or producer.
