Weather Fury: Hail and Floods Slam Four Provinces

Planning your day in South Africa often starts with a look at the weather, and today's forecast brings varied conditions across its nine provinces. Beyond just temperatures and UVB forecasts, understanding each province's unique geographical and demographic characteristics provides a fuller picture of this diverse nation. This daily update compiles the essential weather outlooks and key provincial facts to help you prepare.
Gauteng, the smallest province at 18,178 square kilometres, surprisingly holds the largest population with an estimated 16 million inhabitants as of the 2020 census. Its administrative capital is Johannesburg. Today, Gauteng expects cloudy and warm conditions, though some areas will be cooler, with scattered showers and thundershowers. The expected UVB Sunburn Index is Moderate.
Moving eastward, Mpumalanga, the second smallest province spanning 76,495 square kilometres, is home to an estimated 4.7 million people, making it the sixth most populous. Mbombela, formerly Nelspruit, serves as its capital and largest city. The province will experience morning fog patches along the escarpment, followed by cloudy, cool to warm conditions with scattered showers and thundershowers.
Further north, Limpopo ranks as the fifth largest province with an area of 125,754 square kilometres and an estimated 5.9 million residents, making it the fifth most populous. Polokwane is both its capital and largest city. Today's forecast for Limpopo includes morning fog patches along the escarpment, with general cloudy and warm weather, though the Lowveld could be hot, accompanied by scattered showers and thundershowers.
The North West province covers 104,882 square kilometres, making it the sixth largest. With an estimated 4.2 million inhabitants (seventh most populous), its capital is Mahikeng, formerly Mafikeng. Weather conditions are expected to be partly cloudy and warm, with scattered showers and thundershowers, though these will be isolated over the western parts.
In the heart of the country, the Free State is the third largest province at 129,825 square kilometres, but it is the second smallest in terms of population, with approximately 2.9 million residents. Bloemfontein, South Africa’s judicial capital, is its capital and largest city. Expect morning fog patches over the extreme eastern parts, otherwise partly cloudy and cool to warm, with scattered showers and thundershowers.
The expansive Northern Cape stands as the largest of South Africa’s provinces, encompassing 372,889 square kilometres, yet it is the smallest in population with an estimated 1.3 million inhabitants. Kimberley is its capital. Today's weather will be fine to partly cloudy and cool to warm, with isolated to scattered showers and thundershowers in the east. Along the coast, the wind will be fresh to strong southeasterly to southerly.
Along the southwest coast, the Western Cape is the fourth largest province (129,449 square kilometres) and the third most populous, with an estimated 7.2 million inhabitants. Its capital city is Cape Town. Conditions are forecast to be cloudy to partly cloudy and cool to warm, with northern parts of the West Coast district experiencing hot weather. It will become fine from the west in the morning, spreading east in the afternoon. Coastal winds will be moderate to fresh southeasterly to easterly, strengthening in the evening, but light along the south coast until the afternoon. The expected UVB Sunburn Index is Very High.
The Eastern Cape, the second largest province at 168,966 square kilometres, has the fourth biggest population with an estimated 6.7 million inhabitants. Its capital is Bhisho. The western half of the province will be partly cloudy initially, then cloudy and cool with isolated thundershowers in the north-east and isolated showers and rain in the south-east in the afternoon. Coastal winds in the western half will be light to moderate westerly, becoming moderate to fresh easterly in the afternoon. The eastern half will be cloudy and cool with scattered showers and thundershowers, but isolated in the west. Coastal winds in the eastern half will be light to moderate southwesterly, becoming south-easterly in the afternoon, and north-easterly in the evening.
Finally, KwaZulu-Natal, the seventh largest province at 94,361 square kilometres, is the second most populous with an estimated 11.5 million inhabitants. Its capital city is Pietermaritzburg. Morning fog is expected over the interior, followed by cloudy and cool to warm conditions with scattered showers and thundershowers, which will be widespread over the extreme north-eastern parts. Coastal winds north of Cape St Lucia will initially be moderate northerly to north-easterly, otherwise fresh to strong southerly to south-westerly, becoming light to moderate south-easterly to easterly south of Durban from late afternoon. The expected UVB Sunburn Index is Very High.
Residents should also be aware of impact-based weather warnings. A Yellow Level 4 warning for Severe Thunderstorms, bringing heavy downpours, flooding of low-lying areas, susceptible roads and bridges, large amounts of small hail, and strong damaging winds capable of damaging infrastructure, settlements, vehicles, and livestock, is expected for the northeastern parts of KwaZulu-Natal. Additionally, a Yellow Level 2 warning for Severe Thunderstorms with similar heavy downpours, localized flooding, large hail, and strong damaging winds is expected over Gauteng, Mpumalanga, the eastern parts of the Northern Cape, and the western parts of KwaZulu-Natal. No fire danger warnings or advisories have been issued.
