The young couple's bodies were discovered a week ago in a lodge near the Sabie game reserve in Mpumalanga, with authorities investigating the case as a suspected murder-suicide. In the wake of this tragedy, an old clip of Cameron discussing her experiences on a student exchange programme has resurfaced across social media.
The resurfaced clip features Cameron Waldeck-Cooks joyfully recounting her time on a student exchange programme in the US last year. She spent part of her exchange at the Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School in Atlanta. In the video, Cameron expressed feeling "safe and welcomed" during her stay. Her favourite memory from the trip was the freedom of driving with her new friends, a privilege she enjoyed given the legal driving age of 16 in the US. She also cherished watching football matches and engaging in social activities with her peers, remarking that it felt like she was "in the movies". Sadly, the 17-year-old would not get to experience driving in her home country, South Africa.
Both Cameron Waldeck-Cooks and Ethan Coetzee's lives were cut short in this devastating double tragedy. At the time of her death, Cameron's family revealed she had just completed a challenging five-day hiking expedition, a step towards achieving her personal goals. She was also an active member of her school's rowing and netball clubs and was widely recognized as a "natural leader" and a "big sister" figure. Ethan, a respected senior student at Penryn House, had been a key member of the first team rugby club and was a national champion in the equestrian sport of Eventing.
In response to the ongoing investigation into Cameron Waldeck-Cooks’s death, The President’s Award for Youth Empowerment has issued a statement pledging its full cooperation with authorities. On Monday, 10 August, the organization stated, "We are aware that the circumstances surrounding Cameron’s death are being investigated by the relevant authorities. The President’s Award will provide whatever assistance is appropriately required."
